Dresden was an easily justified target.

There are a lot of myths built up around this particular raid. For instance one myth is it wasn't a military target. Not only was it a military target it was an important one:

The Allies generally restricted their bombings to industrial targets. When it was becoming apparent bombing industrial targets was of limited utility they adopted a strategy late in the war of targeting communication and transportation. Dresden was an important communication and transportation hub. This strategy was more effective. If the enemy cannot move their munitions then they have no value. This is why you see films of German locomotives being shot up and this is why Dresden became an important target.

However Dresden was also a manufacturing center.

Dresden was Germany's seventh-largest city and, according to the RAF at the time, the largest remaining unbombed built-up area. Taylor writes that an official 1942 guide to the city described it as "one of the foremost industrial locations of the Reich" and in 1944 the German Army High Command's Weapons Office listed 127 medium-to-large factories and workshops that were supplying the army with materiel. Nonetheless, according to some historians, the contribution of Dresden to the German war effort may not have been as significant as the planners thought

The US Air Force Historical Division wrote a report in response to the international concern about the bombing - the report remained classified until December 1978. This said that there were 110 factories and 50,000 workers in the city supporting the German war effort at the time of the raid. According to the report, there were aircraft components factories; a poison gas factory (Chemische Fabrik Goye and Company); an anti-aircraft and field gun factory (Lehman); an optical goods factory (Zeiss Ikon AG); as well as factories producing electrical and X-ray apparatus (Koch & Sterzel AG); gears and differentials (Saxoniswerke); and electric gauges (Gebrüder Bassler). It also said there were barracks, hutted camps, and a munitions storage depot.

The USAF report also states that two of Dresden's traffic routes were of military importance: north-south from Germany to Czechoslovakia, and east-west along the central European uplands. The city was at the junction of the Berlin-Prague-Vienna railway line, as well as the Munich-Breslau, and Hamburg-Leipzig lines. Colonel Harold E. Cook, a US POW held in the Friedrichstadt marshaling yard the night before the attacks, later said that "I saw with my own eyes that Dresden was an armed camp: thousands of German troops, tanks and artillery and miles of freight cars loaded with supplies supporting and transporting German logistics towards the east to meet the Russians".

The RAF gave this explanation:

RAF briefing note to it’s squadrons, about the attack on Dresden “With refugees pouring westward and troops to be rested, roofs are at a premium…Dresden has developed into an industrial city of first-class importance…its multiplicity of telephones and rail facilities is of major value for controlling the defence of that part of the front now threatened by Marshall Konevs offensive…The intention of the attack are to hit the enemy where he will feel it most, behind an already collapsed front …and incidentally to show the Russians when they arrive what bomber command can do” That’s out of the book Armageddon, the battle for Germany 1944–45 by Max Hastings. Simply the women and children of Dresden lived in the wrong place at the wrong time. A city that was important for the upcoming Russian offensive, and they lived in a country which had been responsible for causing 6 years of war, millions of deaths in Russia, the bombing of Britain in places like London, Coventry and also the Holocaust, they where unsurprisingly shown no mercy.

Another myth is 200,000 German civilians died. That number is based on a propaganda release from Germany and is fake news. The number is 25,000 according the city of Dresden estimates. More recent research came up with estimates that are even lower.

Large variations in the claimed death toll have fueled the controversy. In March 1945, the German government ordered its press to publish a falsified casualty figure of 200,000 for the Dresden raids, and death toll estimates as high as 500,000 have been given. The city authorities at the time estimated no more than 25,000 victims, a figure that subsequent investigations supported, including a 2010 study commissioned by the city council.

One problem was, as inaccurate as WWII bombing raids were, the situation was exacerbated by a cloud cover that was so bad German fighters were grounded. In other words the bombers missed their primary targets.

Many of these myths have been propagated by David Irving, a discredited holocaust denier and pro-Nazi British author. He is famous for a lawsuit he lost when the liberties he took with historical fact was brought to light. In other words he is a known liar. The trial is immortalized in the movie Denial.

The outcome of the trial ruined both his reputation and his life.
