While Jupiter is at is highest in the west-southwest, shift the direction of your gaze to just above the east-southeast horizon to see the orange planet Mars, in the constellation Scorpius the Scorpion, as it starts its march across the southern sky. Mars reaches its closest point to earth on the 30th, when it is 46.8 million miles away, the closest that it has been to us since 2007. Telescopes with a diameter of three inches or more should be able to reveal the planet’s dark markings, bright clouds and polar caps. Mars is highest in the sky at about midnight pacific daylight time, and can be observed in detail through a telescope between about 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m., pacific Daylight Time.

The next Jupiter probe (after Juno) is intended to penetrate the cloud surface and find soil. THAT will be an exciting day as no human has seen through the gas layers to view the turf. The intention is to send back hi rez pics of the surface. Hope I live to see that!!!
Looks like Juno will be July 4th!

We were at an altitude of 3,200 ft. sandwiched between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains,.....a PERFECT location with a population of 158 I might add, further reducing the light pollution and voila.......4 days of rain and clouds. Could not see anything but in all honesty, the Moon would have out shined many of the meteors anyways. So...........hope SOMEONE got to see any of them!!!!!!
