Did you catch the comment in regards to the "gravitational wave discovery" and all the excitement that it caused?

"others have since pointed out that the signal could be due entirely to space dust"

I have never seen it myself but I look toward this part of the sky, in Winter VERY often.
There does however seem to be PLENTY of satellites this Winter blazing the ecliptic. And the immediate area. And we have noticed bunches punching through the big "W" in Cassiopeia.

Re: Pleiades53 I am SOOOOO disappointed in you

No doubt...all of us in the US that "know" or maybe even care... try to put Yellowstone out of our heads.  At 40,000+ years overdue for a serious eruption...it's a monster...waiting.
It's part of a cascade volcano arc...700+ mile range...and part of the "ring of fire" around the Pacific.

It spaces 3 or 4 states and was formed by subduction.  Temperatures generated by this process are off the scale and part of the geological attractions to the park. Due to the sheer size and enormous areas of self regenerating lava supply..... it could very well jeopardize existence in some larger parts of the country if it all went up.

Why be worried about a little park?  It's last eruption "Caldera" which provides some estimate of scale, measured 34 miles by 45 miles.

Re: Pleiades53 I am SOOOOO disappointed in you

34 miles by 45 miles, 1530 SQUARE miles of HELL! You are all invited to the East Coast. Come on down. We have great skiing in the winter, good outdoor stuff all around, NO Caldera or tectonic joints in motion. AND,.....we have Maine lobster!
:-)
Back in the seventies, bicycling across the USA, I remember stopping in several "Vapor Caves" and "Hot Mineral Pools" out there, near Casper Wyoming and South of Bozeman Montana to see and experience the magical waters. There was no magic of course but the temperatures of some of those pools was enough to cook your skin! The amount of energy being released every day, plus the source of that energy, is something beyond my comprehension. Sad was the amount of trash that asshats left behind as garbage in those places.
