Because there is still no common understanding in this situation. For example, Ukrainian crisis is called a "civil war in Ukraine" by the Russia's point of view and "Russian aggression in Ukraine" in the US- and EU-dependant countries. We all are subject to mass media propaganda, this forms the public mind, there are not so many of us still open to doubts. There was a chance for Ukraine to keep these regions just implementing the agreements between the Ukrainian government and separatists, but the Minsk II agreements were ignored for many years.

What's going on right now is not the worst thing actually. Our government maybe corrupt but they aren't idiots. There are some hot shots there who'd prefer to bomb the entire Ukraine to remove the threat. If it was US in Russia's place, I think they'd resolve the problem this way.

The fact of the conflict is that Putin aims to affirm his position as leader. Easiest way to do so is making an enemy(Nato) and a victory(Ukraine).

After braking the Budapest memorandum several times, Russias friends will be few and we are back to the Cold War again. And the people of the new Soviet(Ukraine, Russia and Belarus) will have an ok life while Putins friends bades in riches.
