....I have a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse that is a few years old...
I actually have a fairly new one of those (Logitech M510 or M525) lying around somewhere . I haven't switched because I just can't get used to a different mouse than what I'm using; no matter how I adjust the sensitivity, etc., it doesn't go exactly where I want. Maybe I just need to keep trying to get used to it.
Even so, since I have the same issue on multiple mice I don't think it's caused by my mouse wearing out or going bad. I was just wondering if anyone else had seen this problem or knows of a software fix.
I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick. I have it configured so that pushing the throttle all the way forward gives me full throttle, but pulling it all the way back gives me throttle off, as opposed to reverse throttle; I just use the S key for reverse throttle. This is the way I want it.
The problem I have is that sometimes during a session my joystick settings will be changed; this may happen between games in a session, or possibly even mid-game. The settings will change on me in one of two ways: 1) the throttle is reversed from what I set it, so that pushing forward turns off the throttle and pulling back gives more throttle; or 2) throttle in the neutral position (middle) will be off, and full forward or full back will give me full or reverse throttle, although not necessarily respectively. I don't do anything special to get the settings back to how I want them. If I restart BF1942.EXE they go back to how I had them, and possibly also when a new game starts, although I can't remember for certain.
Anyway, at no point during these situations do I go into the Settings menu, so nothing is getting changed there.
This problem has caused me to go over the side on a carrier, and even caused at least one TK. Has anyone seen anything like this or know what could cause it?
Anyone ever run into this? I have a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse that is a few years old, but still in good shape. Every now and then while I'm playing, I just start spinning around for about half a second or so as if the mouse is out of control. I have a similar problem with an identical mouse on my Linux system at work where the mouse just shoots across to the opposite side of the screen. I look for dust or cat hair, etc. in the optical sensor, but usually it looks clear. This isn't happening constantly, but it happens enough to make me wonder what's going on. If anyone has a solution I'd be happy to hear it.
Here is my output using mtr, which basically does a series of traceroutes. Not sure what's going on with hop 2, which is my ISP (maybe they're throttling me, or maybe it has to do with my 1 Gb home LAN going through a 6-8 Mb DSL connection), but hop 10 on Comcast also is showing a high packet loss. Hop 7 looks like it is going through several alternate network paths, but does not seem to be affecting things.

I used to watch that show, and I still remember the song: "LANCE-LOT LINK, SECRET CHIMP..." then three chords.
I don't know how long all the flags have been north of the river in Liberation of Caen, but I noticed it recently and I think it makes the map worse. Here are my reasons:
Having the flags where they are now effectively throws away half the map, and I've always enjoyed playing on that half of the map.
Having everything compressed so close together makes it just non-stop firing, which some people probably like, but I don't. I also think this causes lag from the server not being able to keep up with so many simultaneous events. Many people commented on the lag in the game I just played, and I certainly had problems with the lag myself.
It facilitates the Axis team base camping the Allied main, which was also a problem toward the end of the last game.
Minor point, but the instructions displayed once the map loads don't make any sense, because they say the Allies will have more ways across the river once they capture the flag just south of the river.
Can some of the flags be moved back to south of the river?
Its when a pilot lowers his/her plane down to ground level and kills ppl by dragging them. He/she is not really attacking but flying at lower levels.
That's what I thought it probably meant. I've seen that many times, but I always thought the victim was killed by the impact. I would call it an attack since it's pretty much the same as running someone over with a jeep, and I don't think you can drive a jeep onto the enemy main and start running people down.
Separate from the base attack issue, in my opinion it's at least cheap and might even be considered glitching because it does no damage to the plane (compare real-life damage due to bird strikes). I would not mind at all if it weren't allowed.
I remember some discussion on this. See http://team-simple.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2929 #13, which is consistent with other discussion I remember. There were some other posts in which ATF_SurrenderMonkey had marked up some main base boundaries, including safe takeoff routes, but I can't find them at the moment. Can anyone point me to them?
Swoop killing main allowed? Yes/No?

What is swoop killing?
Just cause you see a minus score doesn't mean its a TK. I do a lot of suicide deaths which leaves with me with a kill and -3. Your report is unfounded from last nights activity.
I'm willing to believe that some of his -3s may have come from suicide deaths if he blew himself up along with teammates.
I mentioned his score to illustrate what was going on. Of the at least 21 negative points in that game, at least 3 of them were for when I was taking off in a P-51 and heard the sound of an expack blowing up my plane, followed by "Catpain Blackadder is no more," and "OLD GREGG killed a teammate." Add to that the incident that occurred a minute or two before, when he shot me as I was running by him (and the other stuff I mentioned), and I think most people can figure out what was going on. You just don't accidentally do these kinds of things, especially on the uncapturable main base where there are no enemies around.
After I posted that I went back to the game (assigned to Axis instead of Allies this time) and noticed he had a score that indicated he had at least 6 TKs (I think it was -5 points and 13 kills). Later it looked like he had reconnected after being disconnected or auto-kicked, because he had -3 points and 0 kills, so he had at least 7 TKs in that game, plus whatever disruptions he may have caused. After I went back he seemed to have calmed down a bit, because he had moved off the Allied main.
I then got some payback in a sniper duel across the river by the windmill, two kills for me, none for him (he could only kill me when I was on the same team, apparently).
Current game on Bocage, USA server, generally disruptive behavior. He started out with radio spam, I think he team wounded someone else, then he kept standing in front of my AA gun. After I had moved away for a half a minute he shot me for a TW (on main base), then I got a plane and he expacked me for a TK when I was taking off. Then when I asked for an admin he claimed he was one (I know he isn't).
Thanks, SurrenderMonkey. I remember that discussion, but didn't remember whether everything was decided. Using it to answer my questions:
No, you may return fire with any weapon or vehicle at your disposal; and yes, you may return fire at any unit firing any weapon, or from any vehicle, inside a base.
Regarding "collateral damage," I actually commented in the previous topic about this:
RSDAdam wrote:This is what's up!
Look at the red line, you came with the B17 and bombed everybody around me. So...my kick is fair, I think. If that is so, then a good strategy to use to fire across the river with impunity is just to have a teammate or two stand next to your tank during your barrage.
No one contradicted my point that if units around a firing unit weren't also fair game, then they could be used as "human shields," so I take it that nearby units are in fact fair game as well.
On going onto the enemy base, I'm still not sure about this one, as I have been on both sides of this issue. I get the impression, though, that it is allowed to actually enter the enemy base for purposes of "neutralizing" someone who is firing from it. Is that correct?
I would like to get some clarification on the rule against attacking uncapturable main bases, particularly regarding returning fire.
- Attacking the enemy uncapturable main base (basecamping or basebombing) is not allowed. You must not snipe at the main base. You are not allowed to shoot at planes during take-off. All other vehicles must be given the opportunity to leave their base. Nevertheless, it's permitted to air strike at a fireing AA gun or a shooting artillery that's inside the base.
The rule only mentions air strikes to return fire. Can other weapons, such as artillery or tanks, be used to return fire as well? If so, are there any weapons that are not allowed?
Also, the rule doesn't specifically mention returning fire on units other than AA or artillery, such as snipers. Is that also allowed, and if so can they only be sniped back, or can any weapon be used?
What happens if there is "collateral damage" during one of these attacks? Is it forbidden to hit other nearby units, or are they fair game?
Finally, is it ever permitted to go onto the enemy main for the purpose of killing an enemy that is firing from the base, such as to put an expack on artillery or to kill a sniper up close? If so, in what circumstances is it allowed?

USA server, Gazala game just ended. He was bombing our (Allied) main (airbase) with a plane, and also came back in a car to attack our airbase.
Not sure what is up with this guy. Just finished a game with him where he ended with -6 points but 12 kills, meaning he TKed at least 6 times. I didn't notice anything other than that, or have any problems with him myself this time, so I don't know what was going on. Maybe he's just a real sloppy player.
Seems to be working again now.
Anyone else having problems getting a list of servers from the master server now? I can refresh, but not update. It was working within the last hour or so.
I forgot to mention it in my previous post, but something that might have helped find your problem would have been a site such as speedtest.net that tests your Internet connection speed. You probably would have seen that your speed was much less than it should have been, and been able to focus on your network connection as the source of the problem.
I didn't see enough to be sure of anything, but I'm wondering if anyone else can add to it.
I just played a game of Iwo Jima (Allied team) on the USA server, and noticed a player named VINcENT on the Axis team. We shot each other a few times as I was spawning at the beach flag, but I never really noticed him being on the Allied team. I did notice his score indicated he had at least 2-3 TKs already when I had been playing only a couple of minutes (I joined the game already in progress).
After a while the Allies started taking some flags, and as I had just taken one of the flags I got TKed by none other than VINcENT, flying a plane, now on the Allied team. Shortly after that I was at another flag, and got killed by him again, this time back on the Axis team. I can't say for sure, but that made me suspicious that he might be switching teams, TKing, and then switching back. At the end of the game his score was 11 points with 23 kills, which means he had at least 4 TKs (I'm surprised he didn't get auto-kicked). Anyway, has anyone else seen anything like this with this player? It's possible it was just coincidence and he was getting auto-switched, but I'm really curious about the circumstances with the other people he TKed in that game.
High disk activity in Windows could be many things. Here are a few possibilities to consider:
A backup running
Windows update running
You don't have enough memory, so it's constantly reading and writing the swap file
File indexing running
There's another that I can't remember all the details, but you can look up Prefetch and Superfetch to see if it might be a possible source of the problem. Someone else might be able to add to this.
Often my Windows 7 system has constant disk activity after it is rebooted or I log in, but after a while it lessens.
It can be helpful to pull up the Resource Monitor in Windows to try to see what process is using what resources (i.e. disk, CPU, etc.):

I've seen this name on the servers before, but never noticed any trouble from him, so this was kind of weird today during a game of Aberdeen on USA. I'm mainly looking for a little feedback from other people who were there as to what was going on. There were a couple of admins on at the time (or they possibly joined the game in the middle of it), who were helpful, but I didn't really have time to explain what was going on, so they may be wondering about the details as well.
I was away from most of the earlier action in this game because I was guarding one of the flags in the rear against possible infiltrators, but then later most of the action came to the flag I was at. At one point the flag was being attacked by several tanks, and my team destroyed some of them. Then I started getting wounded and heard the sound effects that indicate friendly fire and saw SgtBilko who it looked like had been shooting me. But it seemed like he shot me some more even after that. Then I got killed by an enemy tank, at least partly because of being distracted by the friendly fire. I can understand accidentally shooting a teammate when trying to shoot at the enemy, but I don't think that was it since bullets are ineffective against tanks. I made a comment about team wounding in the chat, although I didn't name anyone.
After this incident my team lost the flag and I re-spawned at the main base near an unoccupied tank. I saw SgtBilko there too, and I think but can't remember for sure that he shot at me with some kind of small arms fire as I approached the tank. Then when I got into the tank something hit me and destroyed my tank and killed me. I saw messages in the chat window, "Catpain Blackadder is no more," and "SgtBilko killed a teammate." I believe he was kicked after this, but came back. I was pretty angry after that, and he claimed that I made him TK me, whatever that means; I know there are tricks some people pull to get TKed, but I didn't do anything of the sort. He then claimed he couldn't have TKed anyone because he didn't have a negative score. When I pointed out that being kicked caused his score to be reset to zero he made a juvenile comment about my mother.
Anyway, I'm puzzled by this incident because I don't remember having any incidents or even speaking to him before. At least one other person said he had been camping and TKing. Has anyone else had problems with him?
No, it is not. But you should know, none of us has the ability to post rule changes in that section. The individual who does can read this post and add as needed.
Ah, yes, I guess it does come down to one person then. The discussion is good, though. It shows how things work for those of us reading, and it can be used in any decision that might be made.
so you are saying we cant expect anyone to follow the rules when they pop up in front of their eyes in game?
No, but I will say that I know from experience that I don't see everything that appears in the in-game chat, especially when I'm being shot at. I see displaying rules there as very helpful, but not a substitute for the Server Rules page on the web site, which is a known place to go to see all the rules. If you reply on the in-game chat you have to wait for the rules to appear while the game is going on, if you don't miss them; even then you still can't be sure if or when you've seen them all.
My question comes down to, is it really desirable to omit rules from Server Rules page?
It is very helpful to have the rules pop up in the in-game chat, and I would encourage setting up the servers so that a summary of each rule appears there periodically.
I do think it's still very important to have all the rules listed in the Server Rules page, though. It gives players one place to go to learn all the rules, and be able to know that, yes, these are all the rules. It's not unreasonable to expect that if you follow what you have read on the Server Rules page, you shouldn't have to worry about breaking any rules. That can only happen if all the rules are listed on the rules page.
I don't think it's good to have unwritten rules, because they make it difficult to know what the rules are. They could also make things more difficult for those enforcing the rules, because they have no standard to follow.
We seem to have such a rule, the rule against team stacking. This is actually a good rule; however, the current situation is such that the only way to know of this rule is either to see it enforced on the servers, or else to hear references to it here in the Forum. Word of mouth is not a good way to disseminate rules. We have a defined list of Battlefield 1942 Server Rules, so why not put the rule there?
So, I'm proposing that the following rule be added to the Server Rules:
Team stacking (switching teams so as to affect the team balance unfairly) is not allowed.
In addition I would hope there would be some discussion on what situations it would be allowed or not allowed to switch teams, to answer questions such as these:
Am I allowed to switch teams:
to get on a better team?
to help the team that is outnumbered or losing?
to see how many more people we can get on one team than there are on the other? (I hope this one is obvious)
to be on the same team as my friends or clan members?
because I prefer to play on the {Axis | Allied} team?
because people on this team are just goofing off or disrupting play?
because I didn't want to be switched by the auto balance system?
Can this rule be added to the official rules list?
