Hi!  I’ve read the server rules a few times and checked through forum posts here and there, and I was hoping the community could clarify a few points for me.  I’ve pasted the server rules from http://team-simple.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3 below and I’ve written a few questions in between.  Generally I have my own idea of what’s right and what’s wrong, what’s fair and what’s not, but I’d like to know what other players think about certain situations.  Thanks.

•     Attacking the enemy uncapturable main base (basecamping or basebombing) is not allowed. You must not snipe at the main base.

Please clarify: Is it OK to attack uncapturable Allied beachheads, for example, Omaha and Iwo Jima?  If so, is it OK to spawn camp/snipe these points?

•    You are not allowed to shoot at planes during take-off.

Please clarify:  Is it OK to attack planes or people on a carrier.  When attacking a carrier and a plane starts its take off, is it OK to continue the attack.  How far into the air must a plane be before it becomes a fair target?

•    All other vehicles must be given the opportunity to leave their base.

Please clarify:  Where does the territory of a base end?  If the base is surrounded by a fence or wall, is it OK to engage once an enemy is on the outside of that fence?

•    Nevertheless, it's permitted to air strike at a fireing AA gun or a shooting artillery that’s inside the base.

Please clarify:  Is it OK to engage other units, such as armour and MGs that are firing from inside a base?  Also, is it OK to engage infantry, particularly snipers and anti-tankers that are firing from within a base?  On some maps, for example Battle Axe and Stalingrad, snipers and anti-tankers can easily attack enemy units from within their bases.

•     The previous basecamping/basebombing rule does not apply to Battle of Britain map and Capture the Flag (CTF) maps.

Please clarify:  When playing the Battle of Britain map, of course the Axis can bomb the Allied factory, but is it OK for Allied forces to bomb and strafe the Axis airfield?

•     Pixel-shooting is strictly forbidden.

Please clarify:  Is it pixel-shooting if you can see the target area, or only if the target is out of visual range?  For example, when firing the defgun from Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima, the airfield is impossible to see without a scout’s help, so firing on that would be pixel-shooting.  However, you can see the two flags in the centre of the island.  Is it OK to fire directly at these flags without a scout spotting?

Can you use a non-scout team-mate as a spotter?  For example, could someone close to the target radio back adjustment information, something like: “You’re shooting to far, aim down a little and to the left”.

Also, does pixel shooting only apply to artillery, defgun, and ship guns, or does it also apply to tanks, bazookas, and any other weapon that can fire beyond visual range?

The other rules are all pretty clear but I notice that team stacking is not on this list – is it officially against the server rules?

•    Any form of cheating is prohibited and will result in a permanent ban.
•    Please respect all players. Behavior only meant to disturb or upset players is  forbidden.
•    Racism, political or religious comments that are hostile are not welcome.
•    Excessive swearing is not allowed.
•    Offensive or blank player names are not allowed.
•    Do not spam chat or radio commands.
•    It is forbidden to use jeeps as a "taxi" to get to a plane or a tank faster.
•    Do not insult our admins, please respect those that put time and effort into our server.
•    Do not try to evade a ban, that will lead to a much longer ban.

Thanks,

WS

Hi!

I only just now sorted out my keyboard issues.  It was actually pretty stupidly easy, so for anyone who has a foreign keyboard (mine's Japanese) and you can't open the console window, then try this; go into control panel and select Clock, Language and Regions, then click Change Keyboards and other Input Methods, then select Keyboard and Languages and Change Keyboards.  Then add a US keyboard (just the standard one), at the top drop box select the US keyboard as the default one and close all the windows by clicking OK.

Note' This is for Windows 7 64bit.

Now the console window can be opened in game by pushing the button under the escape key.  On a Japanese keyboard this is the "半角/全角/漢字" button.

Now, all my other buttons are screwed up though, but fortunately its easy enough to change the keyboard back to Japanese.

Thanks for all the good advice - it lead me in the right direction!

I don't actually know what to do with the console though... any advice???

Thanks for reporting. Those players have been checked. El Alamein is a map favorable to basecamping. Maybe add another AA gun in main bases?

Perhaps an AA gun that can not shoot at the planes on the runway. I notice often enemy units will bailout into the AA and then shoot the planes on the airfield/taking off.

Thanks for your interest.

There's a whole bunch of punks screwing around on SiMPLE USA at the moment.  The map is El Alamein. At one point all these players had minus scores; pavleg, BFSoldier, power 111, Roger_, wittmann and Vika, oh and Gunther Wesserhund, but he's a bot.  But being serious, it was pretty annoying.  Oh, and player XD was base bombing like an MF - not very nice for someone whose nickname is derived from a smiley face.  At the same time there were around eight players that were trying to play seriously, from what I could tell.  I reached the point where I chose ALT-F4 rather than finish the round.

But on a positive note, tomorrow is Friday, it's Halloween and, here in Japan, we have a long weekend.  So what's one ruined round compared to the possibility of an amazing weekend to come!

#487 Re: Feedback » Server kick threshold » 2014-10-23 16:50:43

Actually that just happened to me playing Berlin on USA Server - fortunately the other players voted no.  It was a fairly fun game too, but in the last 1/4 of it someone tried to vote kick me out about 6 times in a row!  I have no idea who it was or why they wanted to kick me.  I don't think I TKed too often and I certainly wasn't doing anything against the rules - I was on Allied team so there's no uncap or anything.  I didn't even have the highest score.  I guess it was just a grudge.

Is it possible to have kickback on all weapons apart from landmines?  Or have no team damage just for landmines?  Although that would completely change the dynamic of using mines because then you could run up to a tank and chuck a mine on it and not die.  Oh well, perhaps there's no perfect answer.

BTW, TGIF!

#488 Re: Report Abuse » Player with the imaginative name, Player, is playing up on SiMPLE USA » 2014-10-22 16:16:44

Actually it turns out that the video of that round did upload.  It's pretty long cause I recorded the entire battle but our friend can be clearly seen acting like a prick with the B-17 in the first 10 seconds of the film.  I tried to check the scorecard regularly to see how many times he was changing teams and how many players were sitting on negative points because of him.  Actually, for the most part I deliberately stayed away from him - he did jump in front of my jeep once though, I think - but when I died (which tends to be fairly damn often) I tried to follow him on the observation screen.  Perhaps someone will recognise his playing style.

Sorry, I guess that no one would really understand that reference.  Japanese salarymen (suit wearing company employees) don't deal with stress very well and commit suicide by jumping in front of trains.  It happens daily in Japan.  But when they do that, their families have to pay compensation to the railway company for the delay caused by, you know, having to stop the trains and clean up the mess.  However, because JR (Japan Rail) is the cheapest in terms of compensation, it's the first choice for most jumpers.  Therefore, if you're riding a JR train there's a fair chance you'll have a delay.  Hence the reference to our friend Mr. Player jumping in front of a tank like a suicidal salaryman at a JR station.

At around 07:00AM, L.A. time, a player called "Player" was demonstrating the art of being a prick.  This guy is indeed the grandmaster of the art.  He must have got at least six people kicked for 'TKing'.  The map was Boccage - I think - and he started out by parking the B-17 in front of the Mustangs.  Being the start of the game and everyone spawning in the main base he had a plane full of passengers.  Needless to say, before too long he was TKed by a player who was quickly fed up with his antics.  However, that one TK resulted in all three B-17 passengers being killed - thus, quite a minus score there.  At the end of the previous round I'd seen him throw himself in front of a tank like a salaryman on the JR.  Seeing his game, when the next round started I hit ALT-V and X-Fire started recording his nonsense.  I attempted to upload a video to youtube but unfortunately It didn't want to process beyond 95% - and I'm not a patient man.  This guy was employing all sorts of tricks to get others kicked - and was successful.  He is truly a master in the prickish arts.

Anyroad, there didn't seem to be any admins on at that time so I thought I'd say something.

That's a shame.   Is kickback damage where you get damage if you hurt a teammate?  That's my preferred option anyway.  I guess TKers will always find a way to annoy people no matter what though.  We just have to suffer through it and avoid the temptation to retaliate. wink

I see what you mean, it does suck when you suddenly die because someone drove over an old landmine or something.  But, in terms of realism, not being able to attack an enemy's main base is also not very realistic - in war that would be a high priority target.  But I see that to make this game more playable then rules are made and enforced as best they can be.

How about a situation where if you TK a player in your uncapturable home base then you lose health/die, but outside of the main base the usual situation applies.  When I have trouble with punk TKers it's usually within the main base where the TKers feel safe - if they try that bollox outside, where the battle is raging, then they have to deal with the enemy, right.

This is all just musings, I have no idea about programming or modding and I have no idea how easy or difficult it would be to make a change like that.

#493 Re: Feedback » Server kick threshold » 2014-10-09 16:39:05

I often play "HOKKAIDOJPN#1 Schindler'sList" and on that server if you team damage - vehicle or soldier - then an equal amount of damage comes off your health.  Therefore, if you team kill then you die instantly.  It makes team killing no fun at all - cause it's just suicide, and it teaches you to be careful when throwing grenades, firing artillery and carpet bombing with the B-17.  I think if you had this system then the intentional (and careless) TKers would move on pretty soon.  Thoughts?

As far as I remember, you are from the U. S. and since you like to learn history, I have got a question. I would like to know how does the official U. S. propaganda, that no doubt has very hard influence on the educational system, affect on the historical literature, including textbooks for schoolchildren and students. I spent my school years in 90s reading textbooks written in the Soviet Union in 80s and it may be assumed these textbooks were written under influence of the committee of censorship which has to decide whether the schoolchildren are able to know some historical facts or not. Also, some facts were a bit distorted to form the "proper" perception from reading. Some time later, I already learned history in the university and I was a little bit more open to the other sources like the other modern textbooks, lectures, Internet etc. In spite of this, I still even think that Soviet textbooks weren't really that biased at all, excepting some details. Once I decided to read a history textbook written for U. S. schoolchildren and the page about WWII really frustrated me a lot because of the role of USSR in WWII and the "red terror" of the Soviet regime. For example, I learned that over 40 millions Ukrainians were killed in GULAG, despite the fact that population of Ukraine those days was lower than 40 millions people. It was really ridiculous to read like it's ridiculous nowadays for me to read some Western media when they type something about the freedom in the country I live in. Back to "bloody regime". I decided to know what the Soviet propaganda type about the concentration camps in U. S. and I understood I don't remember that I ever learned something like that in school or university. Hence, I have got a question. Do you U. S. people learn something in school about internment of Japanese Americans during the days of WWII? I know you learn a lot about segregation, the rights of blacks, quote M. L. King etc, but I would like to know what you learn about internment. Just asking...

Hi Nameless, Actually I'm not from the USA but it seems that someone who is from the US has already answered your question.  I think you're right to call school taught history 'propaganda', regardless of what country it's taught in.  In some countries it's outright propaganda and in others it's subtle, but I think the bias and desire to paint a positive/less negative picture is always there.  I guess we went to school at the same time, but I in New Zealand.  The history that was taught to us touched on world history but didn't go too deeply into any issues, apart from the New Zealand history modules.  We only delved into "real" history in senior high school, but by then it was an elective subject that only around 10% of my year took.  In 6th form history we looked at the "Road to Sarajevo", from the Franco-Prussian war of 1871(?) and the unification of Germany and Italy, the rise of Gemany as a European power and the dreadnaught arms race with Great Britain, through to the outbreak of the first world war.  Then we moved on to Tsarist Russia, the rise of the Bolsheviks, Ruso-Japanese war, Lenin and the revolution.  After that we looked at the interwar period, hyperinflation in Germany and the rise of Hitler, fascism and the Nazis.  Then we shot over to China and studied the fall of the dynasties and the rise of Sun Yat Sen, and finally we looked at Rogernomics and the new right revolution of the 4th Labour government in New Zealand.  In 7th form we spent three quarters of the year studying Tudor/Stuart England and then some very local history where we literally studied a nearby sheep farm.

So, history taught in New Zealand covers many topics but its goal is to teach history as a subject, rather than teaching history of places as fact.  Our textbooks certainly had a bias towards the standard, pro-empire narrative, but we were encouraged to analyse the backgrounds and political leanings of the historians whose books we read.  However, this was only in senior high school, in a class in which 90% of the students did not take.

I am sure Tuia will sort you out Sam your a good player

In terms of calling someone a Nazi in a game where at least half the maps feature a Nazi verses Allied situations, regardless of your opinion of either side, it would be impractical to ban the word "Nazi", or any other war-time slur.  Personally I cringe when I hear players talking about killing "Japs" and "Yellow people" because I'm currently living in Japan and I have a fair affiliation to the locals.

In regard to the use of banned accusational words, as in any game, online or otherwise, accusing someone of playing outside of the rules will certainly cause a break in the immediate game-play and will encourage a situation where players are forced to discuss or defend their actions, thus interrupting the game itself.  Therefore, the good people at SiMPLE have created a forum where players can discuss such issues outside of the game itself and not interrupt the game-play of others.

As for the rest of the opinions voiced in this thread, considering their irrelevance to the original concern, i will ignore them.

In the few times when I have had the honour to play against Mr. Suess, he has always been kind enough to give me practical lessons in how not to play this game.   For this reason I hope his ban is not too long, for without players of his calibre to provide competition, we are little more than the victims of team-swapping TKer looking for their next kill.

I have a feeling that sometimes players trick opponents into getting themselves kicked by baiting them into saying banned words.
I've seen players write things like "Hey, (name) why do you cheet?"  Then when the other player responds, but with correct spelling, they get a warning.

I have a Japanese keyboard and neither pressing the " ~ " key nor the " ` " key brings up the console.
Goggled the problem and didn't find any quick solutions.
Haven't tried a Japanese search, because my Japanese is just plain awful.

I'm hoping that someone has heard of this issue and knows how to help me out.
I've tried a few simple things like holding alt + ~ and Shift + ~.
Then I tried pushing every button on my keyboard with different combinations - nothing worked but when I closed BF42 I had all sorts of things open, browsers, calculators, etc.

Anyroad,

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers.

Then make a folder shortcut to your desktop or wherever.
When I right clicked and chose properties it gave me some dodgy file path too.
