For many reasons. For them doing it in the west (they already own a shitload but it's rural/desert mostly) I've heard water rights, claiming land was already federal, or even due to protected species.

They tried doing it to us even though it's reservation land. I don't remember the whole story.. I was about 10. They waited until my dad was deployed and my mom was pretty much harassed by them day after day. They have NO jurisdiction on this land, but they claimed part of it was technically not rez land. Luckily, the VFW helped get a guy who was some higher up person in the Army for my dad and he contacted the BLM about what they were doing to my mom when my dad was away. FINALLY after like a year they sent a letter acknowledging they couldn't take it.
