May 31. "End" of BF1942?

Question for developers on this board:
Is there a possibility to bypass game spy server cracking a specific file in BF1942? Or is this specified impossible because we need some kind of "pirate server" to see hosted games for BF1942? I mean something like PvPGN? http://pvpgn.berlios.de/index.php?page=about

Re: May 31. "End" of BF1942?

This is the end
Beautiful game
This is the end
My only game, the end
Of our endless rounds, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your maps...again
Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land
The End
Ride the BF's highway, baby
Ride the game, ride the game
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The game is long, seventeen maps
Ride the map...he's old, and his skin is cold
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill
This is the end
Beautiful game
This is the end
My only game, the end
It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft whining
The end of nights we tried to fly
This is the end

bypassing is easy, can be done via hosts file (changing ip for master.gamespy.com) or by editing the .exe file and replacing that string there (preferably in some already modified version like that widescreen one that has some checks patched)
i actually hacked together a master server replacement few weeks ago to test whether it's feasible, still needs dynamic server registration added but that's trivial (currently it sends a predefined list of servers to clients)

Re: May 31. "End" of BF1942?

Many other games have had master servers built for them after their original went down.

Tribes 2, Tribes:AA, Quake 3 Arena, Phantasy Star Online.

I would be more focused on contacting EA about saving the game through Twitter, Facebook, e-mail, etc than about it actually going offline.

If we succeed, the game will remain online. We shall never surrender.

Very nice! It will be surely needed an alternative master server since it's obvious EA can't be relied upon. They have removed Battlefield 1942 from their Origin Free Games page and I am not sure you can still download BF1942 from Origin client. I don't believe they will deliver support to BF2, BF2142 and BFBC2 like they have promised to.
What could be done is telling all players to download a modified executable that points to your master server hostname or explain them how to change hosts file and your master server would fetch the servers list from master.gamespy.com while it is still active. After 31 of May, the servers would have to direct their heartbeats to yours master server hostname to show up.
I was about to finish working on a master server, only needed to add enctype2 encoding. I will work on changing BF1942 client, like reducing the time out from 20 seconds for master.gamespy.com connection and other small stuff related.

Re: May 31. "End" of BF1942?

I don't really understand why we have to create an other master server. If GameSpy shuts down, it will only be problematic if you want to refresh the server list (no server will appear on the screen). If EA Games doesn't deliver support for BF, keeping the IP adress in favorites or connecting by Xfire should be enough (I think).
But I think it would be good to warn players on the server that it will not be possible to connect to Simple if they do not have it in favorites. Is it possible to print automatic messages during the game (like Hitler and Stalin quotes) asking players to register on this forum where they can find all they need to keep playing BF ? The BF community will probably lose some players after the 31th May, but we can limit it.
Sorry if what I'm saying is stupid, because I'm not a computer wizard.

bf1942 will freeze when that master server go offline if you click on update button or ingame when you press esc to close or change settings of bf1942 we as bf1942 community all have to work as one team on 1 all out fix so all know where to go

the server population is changing thru years, 2/3 of players that played on simple in 2012 dont play anymore, new players come and they usually have no xfire and will think multiplayer doesnt exist if they dont see servers

That's why I think we should warn players with automatic messages ingame because some of them who are not very active are not aware of gamespy end of service. And other servers should do it too.

Majority of players still use the in-game server browser to search and connect to BF1942 servers, that's why it's important to have a replacement master server. Besides that, if there is no master.gamespy.com connection, BF1942 game locks due to a bug, we have experienced that in the past when the master server was down for a few hours, and players numbers dropped a lot. So, it's essential to have an alternative master server and distribute modified BF1942 client executables that points to the new master server.

I agree but if the alternative master server is not online before 31th May, it would be good to warn players that they can join with Xfire or else, that's what some players suggest on BF-League. For example, on the Facebook page, one guy didn't know it will be possible to join after the 31th.

This is great to know, s[sk] and tuia, that a community-developed replacement master server is in the works to keep the in-game browser alive and functional.  The effort is greatly appreciated.  Not much I can offer to help with unless a Windows port of the replacement master server is needed, which I would be happy to help out with.

It might not be bad to try contacting by email EA and Gamespy and ask them to give us all the software and parameters of the BF1942 master server list which is now used and which will not they use after May 31, so that job easier in order to facilitate the programming work for tuia and ssk?
Whatever, EA has taken a lot of money on this game and nothing would it cost to publish a free and open-source BF1942, the same as it did with the old pumpkin studios known strategy warzone2100. We just need someone from this forum with good persuasive powers to reach them and convince to do what I suggested smile

im just a bf1942 player but i remember the bf1942 server update  freeze from 2010 and 2002 and the hard to get server list from 2007 2005 this freeze will kill bf1942 in just weeks the best fix is new master server and  s[sk] made that exe  he said he would share master server but has to work out some bugs look at this post http://forum.bf1942.sk/viewtopic.php?f= … 5&start=30

we have very little time to do this and have to work as one! community all bf1942 fans!

Very little time? We have until June 30th, 2014 to distribute the master server fix between Battlefield 1942 communities... that's plenty of time if you ask me.

Master server replacement is ready, it's master.bf1942.sk, although for the moment only a selected few servers show up. I don't have anything to do with it, it's s[sk]'s effort. At least, players will be able to use in-game server browser to fetch server list after May 31.

Hopefully he gets the dynamic registration working, or once May 31 (or EA's statements all say end of June now -- maybe they asked GameSpy for a month extension to "consider their options") we'll be blowing up s[sk]'s inbox to add the public servers to the static list. smile
