Very good server browser and freeware: Qtracker

Also you have all the IP addresses of the different servers, you can always join directly by creating a bf1942.exe shortcut on your desktop and editing it like this for example for Simple:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 1942\BF1942.exe" +restart 1 +joinServer 188.165.220.115:14567

But for new people, yes it will probably be hard to find the servers unless they do a Google search by themselves or something.

Hmmm, I have just been thinking. How do new people get the game? They download it via Torrent I guess. So how about we put some README into that torrent with all the information on how to find and join active servers and start seeding that file?

Edit: Or wherever the torrent is offered for download, some information can be added on that website.

EA made an update to the situation.

Doesn't specify bf1942 as that game wasn't one of the bf series that was asked about in the tweet, but they are atleast aware and hopefully working on something.

If anyone saw Psychodad's post...HE'S GOT THE ANSWER.

It will be IMPOSSIBLE to join servers after launching game. Simply pressing the 'multiplay' button will freeze your game, and you will need to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to unfreeze your game.

The FH Toolbox which Psychodad posted is already in effect. it has been developed by PFC Grabbi for several years, and it predates most some other programs, such as Qtracker, (which i doubt will work, nor have I heard of them), so why try something new when there is a program which is already in use, professionally developed (as you can tell from the images) and easy to use?

Even though PFC is a FH server, it doesn't mean you have to play FH. Grabbi is adding several famous Battlefield 1942 servers to his FH Toolbox, so that you can join perhaps aX or something as well as SiMPLE. You are, however, more than welcome to try out FH (best game mod ever ) because the FH Toolbox makes the download process easy and from there you can also see the maps which you need to download for a FH game

I've been trying to spread the word about the end of Battlefield 1942 on aX server, and we need to unite to pass this stage. If we can survive one month after May then the community will live. But just barely.

Here is my post on aX forum. It is a good idea to keep an eye out for solutions/ plans as much as possible so you can prepare yourself for the day of infamy. 31st May 2014.

If you are playing a Battlefield 1942 server, start raising awareness. Say simple phrases, like what I have been doing:

"Battlefield 1942 gamespy masterserver ends 31st may" or be even more shocking
"Battlefield 1942 ends 31.05.14, look out for server forum at forum.bf1942.sk or team-simple.org for solution!"
"Get FH toolbox to play MULTIPLAYER after 31st May"
"Your game will FREEZE if you try to join after 31st May, except by FH TOOLBOX from PFC"
or even change your name to "BF1942 ONLINE ENDS 31st May" and have another friend change his to "GO TO FORUM FOR SOLUTION"

Literally, it won't hurt for you to say it. Keep it as a conversation topic. Keep people interested. Answer people's questions, or direct them to the forum. I already reached 130 people on aX forum. That's hardly a 10% of all active players on aX. Get the word out to as many people as you can, and we try to cut back on as many losses as we can.

Finally...about the IP joining, it's not going to be possible unless you use external program. For me, I will use FH Toolbox (it is already working now). I believe joining by IP requires pressing the 'multiplay' button, and it won't work even if you have saved your 'favorite servers'

Hello Spongy, yes Qtracker is working.

And about joining directly via IP, it works without having to use the "multiplayer" button, just by creating a short-cut on your desktop and editing it.

So I would say, don't panic please, this game is not lost, and maybe EA will even provide a solution, we will see.

Just to clear up things a bit, you can press multiplayer button no problem, when you do you get more alternatives and the one that hangs the game is the "update" button.

tuia wrote something about why and how in another thread, i think it was something like the game checks previously listed servers and have a timeout setting for 6 seconds for every server, so if so assumed, it would take aprox 6*259 seconds before the game starts to respond again.

However after pressing the multiplayer button there is a "add server" button you can use, there you can put in IP and Port and then choose join.

I feared this could happen sooner or later. It is really bad news.
Some of you are aware when master.gamespy.com went offline for some hours or even days, the BF1942 players numbers dropped a lot, because unfortunately most players use in-game server browser to connect to servers. And to make matters worse, if you are not using a patched BF1942 executable, your game will freeze for some long time, when you click MULTIPLAY > INTERNET button because of a bug. I believe BF1942 downloaded from Origin still has that bug, i have yet to test it.
The solution to this problem relies on EA having to create an alternative master server, with at least server list support, authentication support is not needed anymore for BF1942, and releasing client patches (v1.62?) which point to that new master server hostname instead of master.gamespy.com. If EA does not do anything, players will have to use programs like Qtracker or Xfire or -=PFC=-Toolbox or HLSW or GameRanger, to name a few, to find BF1942 servers.

It's not the end. In case EA does not care about BF1942, it seems for now they are only focused in BF2, BF2142 and BFBC2 games, one can create and host an alternative master server to master.gamespy.com. There are two 2 issues, though. Players will have to download a modified BF1942.exe that does not try to connect to master.gamespy.com, but to another hostname, to get the BF1942 servers list. It's very easy to patch it, problem is that most new players won't know about that executable, that's why EA should release a public client patch. And servers will have to patch it too, but that's also easy. The other technical issue is programming the master server, from what I researched master server uses GameSpy enctype2 to encode BF1942 server list and send it to clients, that's the main hurdle. Luigi Auriemma has done a lot of research about GameSpy protocol, it's a great resource. And other game communities have succeeded in creating their own master server. Some good examples:

But, the best solution is getting EA to also support BF1942.

Send EA an email? Since bf1942 is free game im not sure if they will want to put in work.

I don't know, maybe create a petition? They tend to read their Battlelog forums, it should raise their attention to supporting BF1942, but only those who have a paid account can post there.
