Some years ago I've read something about that in a topic about the best options for competitive gaming.
Dunno if it really makes a different
Maybe Tuia or ssk know more about it.

it probably affects the updates you're getting from server about stuff going on on battlefield (either less updates per second or less info on more distant events)
anyway, setting it to modem sounds like a bad idea (unless you have bandwidth problems)
