What is memory "read" error?

The instruction at "0x7c9118e9" referenced memory at "0x00000077". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

This error occurs after launching,
Is being run on Windows XP SP3 on a IBM/Lenovo T60p.

Any ideas what is going on?

Also, when I boot Windows XP in diagnostic mode, the game launches but with no sound. So I'm maybe thinking there is something running that is blocking the memory access or something like that. I'm pretty much just checking boxes and booting to try to find where it is going wrong.

I've narrowed down the service that is causing it -- Plug and Play. The problem is, when I disable Plug and Play from msconfig, there is no audio. When I enable Plug and Play and disable Windows Audio in msconfig, there is also no audio. When looking at Administrative Tools > Services, I notice under Plug and Play that Windows Audio is listed as a dependancy.

So I'm not really sure what to do about this. Also all my system restore points cleared for some reason while I was doing all the reboots to find which service was causing this.

Have you tried updating DirectX? Windows XP is a rarity these days.

Fixed it! Oh my goodness I can't believe I oversaw this. I needed to click on properties and run the game in Windows 98 compatibility mode. I'm still not exactly satisfied with this solution but I think this is somewhat of a typical characteristic of running things on XP.

Windows XP is way better than pretty much everything that came after it in my opinion. I have a modern rig and a retro one.

You should use Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5) compatibility instead of Windows 98. I can't be sure now, but playing Battlefield 1942 on Windows XP did not require any compatibility mode.

Yeah that's what's messing with me a little bit. I don't see why it should need to run in compatibility mode. But the thing is, this was a memory "read" error that was being caused by Plug and Play being enabled, and Windows Audio requires Plug and Play. So I feel like the Plug and Play is a wonky service.

I am thinking of reformatting with Windows XP Home Edition SP2. Thinking maybe it'll be more chill of an environment.

You should try Windows XP SP2 and please reply back if you do it and are successful running Battlefield 1942.
