Weird Graphics/Crashes

Running Win10 on a Win11 laptop (meaning, basically all drivers are spec'd for Win11, but they seem to work fine for other games).

Installed from OG CDs, sharing a CDROM over a network.  Using the widescreen patch.  It's the same setup I have with my desktop with no issues.

What happens is the game loads fine, but there's some weird white bars on the main menu, and the selection bars don't show up.  Plus, there's some really weird formatting issues.  See this screenshot:

That's all fine by me, so I go load up a game.  All seems to load fine again, so I click my spawn location, click my gun (again, no highlights.  See screenshot: iili.io/HnLQVGS.jpg - I've selected "medic" here).

But, when I hit "done", the screen freezes.  The game keeps going, for anywhere between a couple seconds and around a minute, and I can even still move around (sounds play just fine), but it eventually crashes back to the desktop.  See another screenshot.

According to event viewer error logs, the reason is a bunch of different faulting dlls (D3D9on12.dll, ucrtbase.dll, idg12um32xel.dll, idg12um64.dll, D3D8.dll) and IGCCTray.exe.  All of the dlls are apparently DirectX?  And the exe is for Intel Arc Control (display driver panel).

I get the feeling that it's a compatibility issue with Win10 and the drivers, and that other games can cope, but BF1942 is too old and too modded to be able to do the same.

Anyone have any ideas before I submit and upgrade to Win11? lol

Re: Weird Graphics/Crashes

What specific laptop are you using, and what's the mobile GPU on it?

If you're using a laptop with Intel Arc as mobile GPU, then expect a lot of graphical bugs and glitches on it since this is the first time that Intel had release a discrete GPUs to compete against AMD and Nvidia.

And by the way, Battlefield 1942 is Direct3D 8.1, so anything below DirectX 9 games were out of priority for Intel unfortunately. sad

Try to update the graphics driver first, and if the bugs still occurs let us know.

P.S.
Use the "" format (without quotes) when posting an image link here in the forum.

Re: Weird Graphics/Crashes

I'm using an HP, 2L7V3UA, with an Iris Xe.  I have tried a few things with the drivers and nothing has worked, so it's not something that seems to be fixing the problem.  Still, other games built with with older versions of DirectX (eg. Max Payne) work fine, so I don't think it's wholly because of that.  Probably just a bunch of things working together to ruin something in the loading of graphics.

There's some suggestions around of running older versions of Windows on a VM, but I doubt that works if Win10 doesn't.

Still sounds like the best idea at this point is Win11.  I'll probably play around with it again next weekend unless someone gives me a better idea.

PS. Not sure about the format note at the bottom there.  There's nothing between the quotes. wink

Re: Weird Graphics/Crashes

...

Try once to Configure BF1942 via Intel Graphics Command Center. (Profil Bf1942)

Try once to rename that d3d8.dll and start the Game again.

...

Already tried both with no joy.

Any specific ideas for config setting in IGCC?  I've played around with various Vsync settings to no avail.

Maybe you solved it already, but dgVoodoo can fix it.

If you force MSAA with it, you will even have better sampled dynamic shadows on terrain (like from players and vehicles). And the battleship lightmaps seems to work with it too.

If you don't know how to changes settings, there are the files. (Just copy the files to main folder.)

I set 4x MSAA and DirectX12 wrap for you (usually better for AMD cards).

My friend also had this problem(Intel Iris Xe), then he tried this patch from Shing, and he can play normally
