Linux Battlefield 1942 Server Manager Problems

Hello everyone, I'm trying to run the bfsmd on linux to host a server, it starts but with a long line of "Internal Error!"'s, and the manager itself can start the game and set up the map list, but it doesn't send commands to the server and can't recieve them either. Wondering if there's somthing wrong with libraries or just the linux kernel version. I've installed the ncurses5 compatibility library, now working on a chroot, but that still crashes. I noticed bfsmd doesn't throw errors if I don't mount /proc into the chroot. I've tried manually connecting to the server's remote console but it just throws garbage and closes the connection if I try to input anything. Thinking the final solution is to use some old linux distribution on a vm or another computer... otherwise, I can run the server fine with +serverMonitor 1
Thanks for any help!

Re: Linux Battlefield 1942 Server Manager Problems

Hey everyome, thanks for your advice. It turns out I didn't understand the remote console users, thought those were for in game admins to get control of the server from the game console, turns out it was for actually communicating with the server's remote console port. Works now, but have another problem. Been trying to edit maps, but changing anything in a map seems to crash the server (meaning things like spawn point location.) Should the map name stay the same instead of creating like "wake_modified.rfa"?

Archlinux.... lol, not the actual problem but still, not great for a stable server when within 3 days theres a major update that requires a reboot! big_smile

Arch is the best top... newest of the newest... love it.. but NOPE not stable & easy.

The other day i tried the Ubuntu Studio release... wow WAY cool!!! Music software, graphics tools even got kdenlive and blender in it. https://ubuntustudio.org/... also got a very much windows feel to it (some might really like that).

Oeps sorry off-topic smile

Is your new server public ChompTheHyena? And whats the name/ip for it?

Re: Linux Battlefield 1942 Server Manager Problems

Hehe ok ok... i wouldnt mod too many maps if i were you....

I mean its already quite of a achievement to setup a decent bf1942 server!

AND

have it run in a secure low demanding linux box

AND

have it populated (modded maps are NOT popular)

AND

have it moderated decently so people going to want to stay

AND

have it show up in the ingame game browser properly

(gamespy is dead, DUH... and they left a shitload of problems for us old fart games gamers)

www.youtube.com/Ihl9wA4YACs

---add info---
=Ax= server is by far the most popular server for many years now, for many reasons but main reason is he (ssk) advertises his server 4 or 5 times using different ports.

Anyhow hope to see you launch your good work someday... we kinda need another nice server! Dont expect people to like it when u make ur own little thing from it.... many people really dont like the baby nade removes or crazy map changes like 64 players. Actually most players dont even like the FF server settings. But there is not much choice... if u start to run only a few most popular stock maps without any FF and MODS i guarantee you will hit a "market target".

Yeah, modding is a lot of work, especially when they can take your server down due to a crash (like putting defguns on a aircraft carrier but using number keys to switch between them) But I'm curious if you can put a control point on an indestructible vehicle (where the opponent can capture it and kill the driver), like some kind of superweapon (a flying battleship? lol)

Oh yes, i didnt even think about that, mods can introduce new bugs. But there are so many exploits already in BF1942 that i would not worry about that so much.

The main trick, especially with an older and less popular game like this is to get your server to be populated. I wish you good luck! Try beat DICE... we seen one mod in the past to success quite well (DC) but it died out within a few years. The dutch "wake only server" is still going strong. Because it is plain and simple BF1942... what else u need?

In my life i have met so many people telling me they know how to become popular or famous or... by their own little nifty or dirty tricks... but seldom they really get there. And if they do its often by stupid luck or a monopoly.

Re: Linux Battlefield 1942 Server Manager Problems

bfsmd is linked with a super ancient version of libproc, and it uses it rather poorly. That's where the "Internal Error!" comes from. I don't think it effects the functionality though.

I've been getting the "Internal Error!" messages since I upgraded my server from Ubuntu 14 to Ubuntu 16. As you said, it doesn't seem to have any effect on actual gameplay, but it makes the server console useless.

Re: Linux Battlefield 1942 Server Manager Problems

I made a little patch for bfsmd v2.0 to hide "Internal error!" spam while procfs parsing.
PM me if you need it for another version.
