Hi all,
This month ubuntu will release the new version of their linux bake. I have been testing the beta for a few months now and its AWESOME and super smooth!
How to get up and running with BF1942 in linux (the easy way)?
1 download and install ubuntu 18.04 (if u choose the beta, dont worry it will auto update to full this month in less than 20 minutes on regular hardware, this aint windows or mac slow crap).
www.ubuntu.com
(you can do this in just about ANY linux version you like! 100's of cool free linux distro's to choose from, TAKE YOUR PICK buddy)
2 after download go to the software & updates and select the new nvidia or ati drivers
3 then go to the UBUNTU SOFTWARE app store and find/install the WINE version you want, best go for the plain version and also install WINE-TRICKS if u plan to run more windows games that might need some tweaking.
---[AFTER THIS LINE IS BF1942 TWEAKING RELATED, NOTHING TO DO WITH LINUX]---
4 go to your /etc/hosts file and add:
109.71.69.254 master.gamespy.com
How? Open terminal (ctrl-alt T) and type:
cd /etc
sudo nano hosts
add the line at the top:
109.71.69.254 master.gamespy.com
Then with ctrl -c u exit and save
5 copy your working BF1942 folder from your windows installation/partition to your
/home/YOUR-USER-NAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/
folder.
You can also just run BF1942 from your windows partition, i prefer separate copies
6 load your CD key into the wine windows with the wine-tricks registry editor
And you are all done! Run your game by type
WINE BF1942.exe
Now there are many ways on doing this... but this is about the most quick way. You not need super new expensive hardware. As u can see i use an old ASUS computer for this (its an old server where i sometimes like to play a game during work) with a crappy old nvidia card (no idea which one).
I got it up and running in LESS than an hour and i have 240fps on this machine, plenty fast enough i would say.
P.s. i did set the game resolution to 800x600 in windows before i copy just to be sure the window goes full screen properly as i not remember the screen max res for this machine and i had no idea what linux was doing with the screen.
Any questions? Feel free to post here... good luck and have fun!

P.s. for absolute LINUX newbies who might like a bit of a mac experience try UBUNTU BUDGIE
https://ubuntubudgie.org/downloads
Its crisp, quick and easy... throw it on an USB stick or SD card for testing...
Arch linux is for the PRO... my favorite distro is SLACKWARE though.
Also BF 1942 works well with Nouveau.
I havent tried, thanks for the heads-up.... so that means we can also use BF1942 with wayland i guess? Can u confirm?
...
I am still looking to run bf1942 on a Mac.
If you know some nice tutorial. (I guess with wine with WineSkin or winebottler or something).

Tested on myself https://wiki.winehq.org/MacOS
Yes with wine but there is a dedicated mac version also right? A few months ago we had a visitor here in need of help with his mac bf1942 cd... you should have asked him for a copy of that iso!!!!
But on www.winehg.org you can find mac instructions: https://wiki.winehq.org/MacOS
It aint much but enough to get wine installed... after that you can run windows .exe files inside your mac os... which is hmmm... not sure.. i would do bootcamp or better yet a linux install in another partition.
Next month i am back in Bangkok and i have a imac there... let me try it then and if i have any tips i will let you know sir! Take good care.
If you just want a quick nice FPS game on your fresh linux distro i recommend REXUIZ. Quite some players there with nice maps... its a fast shooter build on the Quake engine i believe... its fun and SUPER easy to install:
(choose the .deb file for ubuntu, yes u can also do in windows)
https://github.com/kasymovga/RexuizLauncher/releases
Install the deb file with your app store (in ubuntu) and let it download the 1gb of game data.. after that you are ready to go.
This is what the game feels like:

I have an original Bf1942 Iso for Mac. But sadly the Installer is not startable. The file is shown as not executable.
Sadly i don't have the Mac here and i visit this guy not that much. Would be great to be prepared.
But yes, i should just search myself a little bit.
But i have still no clue, why this installer is not executable. Perhaps too old for new MacOS?
