Lightning makes my joystick light up... or possessed?

There's a lot of lightning here... a lot... pretty much every afternoon/evening. I have a few big surge protector things (not powerstrips) that i plug in my PC, monitor, TV, etc. I even have them plugged into special socket things that are designated for appliances to help protect them from lightning stuff.

Anywayyy... Even if I don't lose power, my joystick lights up when lightning hits close by. My PC turned off & my joystick is plugged into it with USB. It's not a new thing. It's happened since I got here over a year ago.

Why? Is this bad? Demonic possession?

Re: Lightning makes my joystick light up... or possessed?

...

At least on nonOEM PC's you can turn this function off in Bios.

It's called somehow "USB Power" or "USB Charge" (It can be there are two different settings).

...

For Asus Z170 and other Asus Boards as example another option, perhaps for other newer boards too.

Hibernate/Shutdown (S4=Hibernate / S5=Shutdown)

1) Go to BIOS > Advanced > APM configuration > ErP
2) Set ErP to S4/S5

...

Btw. Some never Mainboards also have an App for WIndows 10 for USB Charge. If you installed this, it enabled this option in Bios. > Turn it off in Bios manually.

...

I turn my PC on when i use it then turn it off when I'm not. It's not in sleep mode or anythi g. Completely off but close ightning still makes it light up. Whu does that happens?

Does that erp stuff or usb thing make it so that won't happen? My motherboard is asus sli-premium.

Wow, you still use S939? I have some boards and CPU's in my Locker, but MSi K8N Diamond and two others. Or is it a P5N?

Tell me wich Board you have.

You see it with CPU-Z (Portable Version)

Btw. if you have a P5N32 SLI Premium, then there is an S5 Option in Bios in section > Power > APM Configuration

"USB Resume from S5" > Set it to "Disabled"

I ust know it's a A8N sli premium because it shows it when I boot it up.

I will try to see if the usb stuff is in bios when I boot it up again.

Hmm... A8N sli premium. This could be difficult/different. Until those times, there was a +5VSB Jumper on the Board. Later it got configured by Bios/Software. But the A8N is not really described about +5VSB.

Look in the Bios if the option > Power > APM Configuration that following 2 are disabled.

Power Up by PS2 Mouse + Keyboard   (Just a trial).

It has a blue light on top and 3 buttons on each side that are red. It's this: https://www.amazon.com/Saitek-102989-Cy … B0000AW9P1

I don't know who zeus is.

Does the ledlights on your joystick stay on after such an event, or is it just temporary?

Google it, there is a possible thing that we call  faraday law in electrical but i dont thing so that affect such thing

When lightning strikes, even some distance away, your earth connection is no longer 0 volts as it has had a large voltage potential applied to it.

Lightning:

A lightning strike "cloud to ground" or "cloud to cloud" produces electromagnetic fields that can induce voltages on the conductors (wires) of AC circuits as well as data communication lines, phone lines, or transmission cable.

Lightning ground current flow results when a strike that discharges to the earth couples into common ground impedance paths, causing voltage differential across the ground grid and between ground-neutral or ground-line circuits. In short, the reference ground (supposedly zero voltage) is elevated a few milliseconds, therefore creating a large voltage difference between ground and the incoming power and/or data lines.

Direct lightning strikes, to high voltage primary circuits, inject high current into service transformers and produce voltages either by flowing through ground impedance or flowing through the surge impedance path of the primary conductors. Direct lightning strikes to secondary circuits may exceed the withstand capability of equipment and conventional surge protection devices rated for secondary circuit use.

Lightning causes utility company primary gap type arrestors to fire, limiting the primary voltage but coupling transients through the capacitance of mains, transformers, and injecting surge voltages in addition to those coupled by normal transformer action. Power company protective devices limit life threatening overvoltage; however, they create a number of damaging transients in the process, that may damage electronic equipment.

Lightning does not have to be close to create high voltages in any line (power, neutral ground, or communications). The effects of nature?s electricity induce voltages into all lines for miles around. These voltages near the lightning strike can be catastrophic, the induced voltages a mile away can cause high voltage that can create electronic system failures, and a few miles away can stress electronic equipment causing delayed (latent) failures.

ABAS, that may have something to do with it. Quite often, the lightening is very close. Within blocks of here. It has even hit across the street! Thunder soooo loud and it shakes the house.

Try once to connect the Stick to another Hub (Pair of USBPorts).

No... only when plugged in. PC is plugged into surge protector.

Its morse code from god smile

I think ABAS is on to something, there can be a lot of different kinds of inteference from lightning, so maybe some pulse or frequency that trigger the on/off power on you usb (even tho it seem far fetched)

Some years ago l read about graphic card that had so much coilwhine that it affected garageopeners, cant find that article now but here is something similiar. https://www.mocana.com/blog/2011/11/22/ … or-openers

Electric ground to the house... like the circuit breaker electrical box? It connects to the ground. All of our powerlines here are underground until it gets to the main road out of this place. Luckily that helps so I don't lose power hardly at all except hurricane or a epic strong tstorm. Only a couple of time I have had to flip the things but everything works fine. The little identification things all say its fine.

Outch, i think, i missunderstood something.

Your Joystick is blinking only when there's a lightning and your PC is running? In this case i would say Demonic Possession.

You could try another Powersupply, but only if you have allready another there. To buy one just to see later it was not this is not worth it.

Nooo...

My PC is completely off. Nothing is on. Then when lightning hits in the area the only thing that happens is the lights on my joystick turn on. That's it. Nothing else.

The PC boots up fine whenever I decide to boot it up.

Ahaaaaa...

Normally the powersupplies have those protection included... Most of them. The newer has all this included.

OCP (over current protection)✓
OVP (over voltage protection)✓
UVP (under voltage protection)✓
SCP (short circuit protection)✓
OTP (over temperature protection)✓
OPP (over power protection)✓

The easyest thing would be to test it with another available PS. If you have one withing reach. To buy one just to test is overdose.

...

Do you off the Power when you shut down your PC? (Means > do you pull the powerswitch on your protection box after you shut down your PC?

Re: Lightning makes my joystick light up... or possessed?

I live where there alot of lightnings, my old pc run 24 H and 7 days ...  after a lightning that was so close I went true 3 powersuply and called hydro to check.   The result was  melted ground on main line at the transformer  ( it was feeding 4 houses )  I question my neibhours  and they had similar problems.

Newer pc always on sleep mode and it only flash at time that I set my tasks to work.

1. The why is guesswork, a powersupply is always on even if you shut down the computer (mainly the 5 volt part). Lightning does some woodoo with your PC (could even be some of that overcurrent protection you have plugged in that is causing it).

2. nah as long as it doesnt has a burning smell i dont think you have to worry too much about it.

3. Maybe buy a fire extinguisher just to be on the safe side.

Re: Lightning makes my joystick light up... or possessed?

Yeah, but you know. it's not normal that is happening. Normally when a PC/Powersupply is connected to Power, even when the PC is off,  the Powersupply holds off those creepage. In Worst case scenario, the Powersupply goes defect, but PC should never be destroyed.  But only if it's a PS which includes all those protections.

At the end, it should not happen that some creepage goes through til joystick.

Because of this i asked if you switch the protection box also off when you shut down your PC?

What you can do > tell me the modell number from your Powersupply and i look if it has all those protections built in. Older and older/cheap PS don't have all those protections.
