Game crash because of Video.con

Hey guys,

for a month i played on the server without any problems, but today the game crashs while loading the map.

I figured out that its only on your server and because of my modified video.con with write protection.

The write protection is necessary to use 1920x1080 resolution. The game cant handle it otherwise.

Can you fix it pls?

Thx G3cko

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

You don't need to use modified Video.con to get that custom resolution. You can download widescreen executable BF1942-v1.61-NoCD-Widescreen-Fix.zip, with some little modifications by me.
It's a No CD patch, which has included true widescreen support, without the game being strecthed at higher resolutions and you don't need to edit Video.con file, you can choose your resolution from the in-game menu. It is based on the file BF1942_16_10_9.7z at http://www.wsgf.org/dr/battlefield-1942, which was based on http://chr79.free.fr/matrox/.
I've added a little change to avoid the game hanging when you click MULTIPLAY > INTERNET button, if master.gamespy.com server is not responding/offline.
You just need to extract the package in your EA GamesBF1942 directory (not Origin GamesBF1942) and overwrite BF1942.exe and Mod.dll files. I haven't tested yet if you are kicked by PunkBuster when using the widescreen executable, but it shouldn't. I'll test it today.

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

I'm testing it smile
Finished playing at [5th MR] MIDWAY 24/7 and {FG} Staling. no nades servers with the widescreen executable and no problems with PunkBuster, whatsoever. It's perfectly safe and I recommend it over the old No CD executable. It has widescreen support, just like the file BF1942_16_10_9.7z at http://www.wsgf.org/dr/battlefield-1942 and an important bug fix.

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

I used 7-zip to pack it, but chose LZMA method to compress it. Now, it is compressed in Deflate method. Redownload again, please. It should extract with WinRAR or WinZip.

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

Very strange. I tried the widescreen fix, the original.
http://www.wsgf.org/dr/battlefield-1942

After that i can play on your RtR+SW server, but on your BF1942 vanilla the game crashes again.

Now I tried your fix.
http://team-simple.org/download/bf1942- … en-fix.zip

After install it runs without any problems.

=> So you are running a modserver! Every player with the original game can not connect!

That's really strange. Have you removed the write protection in your Video.con file?
The only difference between widescreen fixes is that mine has included an important bug fix, as I've described in the posts before, so both widescreen fixes should work the same.

No, any player with BF1942 v1.61 can join the servers.

Because the original BF1942.exe has SafeDisc copy protection, which was used to prevent copying to CDs for piracy concerns, and checks if CD is in the tray. That slows down loading the game.
I recommend installing the widescreen package, it is perfectly safe and fixes a bug, which you may have noticed when master.gamespy.com is down. BF1942 freezes when you click MULTIPLAY > INTERNET button, you have to reboot your computer or wait almost 2 hours till it stops hanging. tongue

why the contentCrc32.con?

contentCRC32.con and init.con files are included in the package, in case someone uses it on BF1942 v1.6. They are needed to join pure (content-check) servers v1.61 or v1.612.

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

Thanks! I thought contentCRC32.con was needed for the clients since it is included in the Official BF1942 Client Patch 1.6 to 1.61. It has been removed from package.

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

What surprises me is that contentCRC32.con has different CRC values for the same map files in v1.6 and v1.61. Shouldn't they be the same?!

when they compute checksums, they incorporate version number too into the result

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

I've updated the widescreen package. There were still some silly checks in BF1942.exe, which made me waste hours reinstalling the game over and over, thinking it was an InstallShield error or graphic driver problem, without knowing the game would not launch if there is no CD drive. I have no CD or DVD drives in my computer, don't ask why tongue. So, removed that calls to that stupid function which would scan all drives from C: to Z: searching for CD-ROM drive and fixed the .dll checksum differs error message if you ran BF1942 in windowed mode:

2132106dll-checksum-differs.png

BF1942.org file is no longer needed.

Thanks! I've been using a virtual cd just for bf1942 smile and i didnt know why the windows mode crapped out all the time, kinda annoying when you are mapmodding and run !nextmap

I use too windowed mode for modding maps and that .dll checksum differs error was driving me insane. Everytime BF1942 relaunched after ending a map, it would call BF1942.org which was the original file, not patched, therefore the error message.

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

You could use a debugger, it doesn't give that stupid error...
Thanks, tuia! I think all your updates could be released as BF1942 v1.62 patch smile

Re: Game crash because of Video.con

Of course not. wink
Before it was patched, if master.gamespy.com was down, for every server in your in-game server list, BF1942.exe tried to connect to master.gamespy.com server, when you clicked MULTIPLAY > INTERNET button. In case it was down, BF1942.exe waited around 20 seconds to establish connection and freezed during that. So, there around 300 servers in the list, it takes almost 2 hours to go through all of them.
