Map Modding

Hello,

I'm a veteran player coming back to the game after a while.

I was wondering if I'm the only one who thinks that the way some maps were modded is not the most suitable, creating chaos and not giving as much fun from the gameplay as it should. Of course I can give a more precise description of what I mean, but bearing mind I don't expect anyone to give a heck about my opinion, I won't go into the detail for now and if anyone cares after all, I can build on that later on. But to give an example, Aberdeen is a total mess, with so many tanks that firstly it doesn't make much sense to play as any other profession than eng / anti-tank. Also, to my total bemusement, it's not even possible to capture the enemy's base, the thing which was the most exciting in the whole game on this map & required good awareness of the situation from both teams. Basically I believe the number of additional tanks should be decreased on the majority of maps, as the stages are rather small and on many maps it's really difficult to play as infantry, as you get blown away by some random player in a tank. I understand that the server has many slots (to my mind too many), but the original balance of tank - infantry players was rather good. If providing additional tanks is necessary, it should be 1, maybe 2, not 10, as on Aberdeen.

I thought, why not to try to raise the issue, maybe somebody shares my opinion.

Re: Map Modding

I'm not a tank guy- I will generally play as a sniper on this map- it's difficult due the distance from spawn areas to the areas of likely enemy engagement- and also the lack of cover- again, It's not a map I like, however i can have a fairly good game and get a number of kills as a sniper, and minimize the number of times I would if I was playing another class, like engineer or bazooka.

Give the sniper class a try and get way away from the action and practice the long shots- when they do land a kill, it is rewarding.

Re: Map Modding

InguiringMind, yeah, if playing sniper on Aberdeen is possible, I'm glad to hear, but without map modifications it would be even more enjoyable. As things currently stand, trying to capture the middle flag on this map is not a skill game, but the game of luck, with shells flying all over the middle town.

Also, I'd suggest two additional tweaks:
- get rid of these constant map votes...
- create a TeamSpeak server for voice communication & better immersion

We are only guest here- without input on how the maps are modded of how the server is operated.
Sadly, if the map is really not to my taste, I simply disconnect for the night and try again the next day.
Everyone has a different idea as to what maps they like, and I respect their choices.

Re: Map Modding

I agree, the ability to capture the main bases is what makes Aberdeen fun. Unfortunately the stock maps have been modded so extensively that some of them are barely recognizable. And this is not just a SiMPLE issue but something you see in different servers. Most of the people modding these maps don’t have a clue about map balance or map making. It’s not really their fault though, server side modding is not easy to do.

Re: Map Modding

Most mods are misguided attempts to correct a perceived shortcoming or flaw in the map. Rarely does a mod achieve any improvement.  It's reminds me of the saying- one step forward and two steps backwards.

Re: Map Modding

I must disagree on the additional tanks on Aberdeen. I usually play on Tanks-a-lot and it's definitely a tank map. Not to say at all that infantry can't play on Aberdeen. Some develop skills that allow infantry to deal with tanks. We had a few bazooka pros and others like Bat and the late Frenchy who excel with mines and Xpaks. It's a big map and without the tanks there everyone would have to waste play time running to the combat areas. It gets boring and fewer tanks make it worse.

Uncapable home flags do sometimes turn the game into a base lockup, but otherwise either side can send a fast vehicle into the opposing home base and the game is over in  5 minutes. That's what used to happen in the old Wild West days of BF42. That's not fun for anyone except the one who captures the home flag.
