it's not rare. censorship simply doesn't allow a discussion. most people are more down to earth than the censored internet lets on.
there is no west vs east or left vs right. take an average working person from russia and europe or china and usa etc - take away the brainwash (the internet/the tv) done by their government and soon they'll realize they are not enemies to each other. it is so by design that they think they are. some forces are working really hard to keep the world polarized, to whom country borders don't exist.
