Debian used to be my preferred Linux distro, but they switched to systemd, now I am testing other distros without that plague.

Did you install Battlefield 1942 from original CDs? If so, after you install the game, apply Battlefield patch v1.6 (http://www.gamershell.com/download_5004.shtml) and then Battlefield 1942 GameSpy patch v1.61 (http://team-simple.org/download/battlef … _v1.61.exe).
