I anyway never understood, why diamonds are such expensive. Diamonds are not rare, but smaragds are.
I guess it's the same story with scots skirts. Everybody believes it's a tradition, but it's only know since 1904 or so. The market for Diamonds were pushed in the 50's. Before it was just a hard stone used for drilling, machine industry etc.
It reminds me of a story i heard once, i dont remember it exactly but something like this: There was a business man that started a company to sell Salmon, now at that time people was used to "white" salmon and where he got his it was red or "redish" you know, and so there wasnt much sale until he started to advertize them as "unbleached" salmon, that succeded very well, he became rich and now no one wants "white" salmon anymore
