Ron from Qtracker has a replacement for the GameSpy master server. Edit this in your hostfile.
65.112.87.186 master.gamespy.com
65.112.87.186 master0.gamespy.com
btw: I heard that s[sk] had a replacement already but I'll post this anyway.
Nice finding Zero. His name is Ron Mercer. Just tested it, and it seems to work.

Things are getting interesting now. Two masterservers - and maybe more in the future, who knows?
But overall, the population hit for BF1942 will be big and permanent I think. A lot of people believe that as long as there's a technical solution to this situation, then population will be unchanged. Problem is that the majority of players, rarely or never visit gaming forums, and easily give up when encountering tech issues. Just see how few play custom maps and mods of the total playerbase, even though it takes minimal effort to use them.
My estimate is that global pop one month after the shutdown will be at one third or less, and that's a huge drop.
And save your efforts with writing to EA, making petitions and the likes. They've made their decision, and a few thousand non-paying gamers won't change their minds.

Yeah and it will be easier now to let people install custom maps

Yes but no one is letting servers know how to change the master server so it redirects to the new ones..
Servers aren't top priority, now, because a master server can send a static list after master.gamespy.com shut downs. Clients (players) do have to be noticed about the shutdown and all changes involved, download updated executable and replace or edit host file.
This master2.qtracker.com or 65.112.87.186 works for Battlefield 1942, but it is not possible to register a server with heartbeats, it is a static list.

You need Qtuplink to register a server with heartbeats
The program list all game titles but displays status: The server is not running. Negative on Qtuplink

This is part of s[sk]'s information at http://forum.bf1942.sk/gamespy. The section named "information for server owners." No different than the client instructions; just add the master.gamespy.com entry to your local etc/hosts file so that when the server code tries to connect to gamespy, it will actually be using the address of the replacement master server instead. That should be the approach whether you're using s[sk]'s master server or anyone else's; it will go to whatever IP address you put for master.gamespy.com in your etc/hosts file. (Or for a Windows server, \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file.)

So now three or more masterservers are available?
109.71.69.254 master.gamespy.com - s[sk]
65.112.87.186 master.gamespy.com - Qtracker - Ron Mercer
master.333networks.com - 333networks.com
Somebody said the Qtracker one is static, does anybody know if the 333 one is too? And maybe they'll be changed to dynamic in the future?

master.333networks.com does not work as a master server replacement.
I was wrong about master2.qtracker.com, it works fine for BF1942. However, I would stick with s[sk]'s master server and not rely on another commercial (Qtracker) master server.
same here (PFC) for same reasons
1.) not commercial
2.) for BF 1942 only
3.) possibility to work together with s[sk] up get features on top to basic functions running
over the gs protocol he just manages the very root features which the bit complex protocol runs, which is totally enough for our purpose, but ability to extend this is a nice to have feature we won t have @ 333 or any other.
http://forgottenhope1.com/masterserver/
reads out all features of gs protocol.... and servers it is connected to.... atm some things are not implemented yet, but I guess they will be impemented by s[sk] as soon as time will pass by a bit.
Greetings
