Windows XP - anyone playing on, or tried playing on a retro PC + WinXP

I've got an Athlon XP 2000 machine up and running with Windows XP, I've tried installing BF1942 from my original retail CDs, installing all the official patches up to 1.61 that I had stored on an old HD. Obviously this original version no longer works for online play, as the server system was taken down.

Am I right in thinking that the patches made available by Simple are for modern machines? Is there a minimum OS requirement? I tried installing the patches on my Win XP installation, but I get various .dll missing errors. Is there any way I can get this going, or should I give up?

Maybe try running it in compatibility mode?

You need to be careful running a XP machine exposed on the web. I don't think the XP machine will be online very long before it's under full scale attack.
Certainly, if all you are planning to do with the machine is play Battlefield, it may be an acceptable risk.
