I am interested to know among tank oriented players (not infantry or air players) whether or not they think there should be any kind of gentlemans rules. For example, on the best tank map Aberdeen, I find that when the opponent agrees that there will be no flag taking, the match gets quickly decided on kill points.
I'm not sure I understand your question?
All the modded tank maps like Tank Arena, Tl_aberdeen, Tl_Cambrai, etc., each have 1 flag you fight for. That way you don't end up driving around hiding - you have to either attack/defend the flag and in the end win by tickets. Ofc. the most common winner will be the one with the most kills.
In a 1vs1 I think any kind of flag focus is an uneccessary distraction. Tank Arena is a bit of a joke as a map. Aberdeen will always be king. These would be my rules for for the fairest possible tank 1vs1.
No flags.
No mines, ex-packs, small arms or bazookas.
No pad sitting after tank is repaired.
You have only your repair wrench and you must die with your tank.
20 minute rounds on Aberdeen
1st to 10 kills wins round.
Best of 3 rounds to decide the winner.

Tl aberdeen vs vanilla aberdeen by your conditions:
No flags - 2 bases per side and 1 middle flag instead, you can't play CQ without flags.
No mines, xpacks, zookers - only engineer with repair key.
No pad sitting - still 4 pads on map, decide with opponent.
Dying with tank and no inf - same as previous, decide with opponent.
20 min lenght - server settings (most pw-ed servers have it set correct).
1-st 10 kills winner - no sense since you have flag and 20 min per round.
Best 3 rounds - 2 rounds is enough, just count overall tickets and you will see the winner.
I have found 20 minutes is usually enough to decide a no flag 1vs1 Aberdeen with a 1st to 10 kills win factor. Sometimes it's 9 kills or 8, hardly ever reach the end of round with say, 4-5 being the winning score. Best of 3 rounds doesn't mean 3 rounds in a row, it means a maximum of 3 rounds assuming the scores are 1 - 1 after 2 rounds. Obviously 2 - 0 means the match is decided. I am glad you agree on some of my rules, especially the no weapons only repair wrench as this prevents a bail and mine from an opponent who's tank is critically damaged, and similar unsporting tactics which are annoying in multiplayer games but become very annoying 1vs1. If you have to die with your tank it makes the match about tanks, not the box of tricks in your pocket. The reason I prefer no flags, on Aberdeen, is that with the right circumstance, it's possible to kettle your opponent in his base, if you are prepared to stand your ground outside it and take them on. This can shorten the 1vs1 round to as little as 10 minutes.
Those rules you suggest have been like that for 100 years, lol. The TL maps are even modded that way = only engi repair tool.
The problem about ur standard Aberdeen 1v1 fight is that you can end up playing around each other for ages. Let's say I lead against you with 1-2 kills then I can actually just drive around hiding on that big map, and win when the 20 minutes have passed. With a ticked bleed you actually have to speed up, and not spend 5 minutes looking for your opponents ass .
The only thing you might lack a bit on those TL_maps is those super long range fights you had on Arcor Arena against jna, MacDaddy and others.
Not many 1vs1 end up being a hide and seek. I can see why hide and seek isn't as easy on Tank Arena, but then you know exactly where the enemy will be on Tank Arena - dug into the buildings at middle. At least Aberdeen has open ground and more terrain variation. And Aberdeen is not that big of a map, you can traverse it and patrol looking for an enemy in a couple of minutes. I can say this though, if during a 1vs1 I was 1 - 2, and my opponent decided to play hide and seek for more than a few minutes, I would just declare them the winner and leave.

I remember them well. jna parking his M10/Tiger on the furthest hill at the back away from the action behind a screen of team mates in Shermans/Panzers and use it like a piece of artillery. Good tactic to avoid getting killed, waste of a heavy. He could have poured a concrete gun emplacement instead of hogging the heavies.
It's cool we see things differently - there is always room for changes and different opinions .
I admired jna's skills and it was lovely being on the same team as him in the end.
Anyway, good luck on the 1v1 Battlefield, Sepp.
Because I play constantly on Aberdeen I feel I have a valid opinion. Oddly, (or not) I agree with Sepp on his rules and the value of the Aberdeen map. Within those parameters it would determine who is the best tanker, at least at the time of the match. Not taking ping into account, but what else can you do?
1 other factor could be the relative superiority of the tanks used. I know Sepp would choose a tiger pretty much 100% of the time. Agreeing to trade vehicles, likely M10 v Tiger might make for an interesting match. But that would not be an 'official' rule, just something to make it a more equal challenge.
All matches must start and end with a handshake and a cigarette offer as well, please.
