Those Sonys are quite good, though they tend to over-emphasize the lower frequencies (good for listening, bad for editing).  I would steer your son away from wireless - wireless is rarely ideal for anything beyond screwing around.  There is always going to be some element of latency to wireless, it's the nature of the technology.  When you are splicing and dicing audio tracks, the last thing you want is more latency.

For wired headphones, your best bet is to stick with "neutral" frequency response, referred to as FRFR (full range, flat response).  There are few headphones that will give you true FRFR at any realistic price point but here are the two most popular ones - both are excellent.

1. Beyerdynamic DT-880 ($200-250) - these are super neutral and give the most "flat" frequencies.  They are also "open-back" headphones, if you don't know what that means, look it up.  Some love it, others hate it.  These are my go-to for audio recording and editing, they give the closest feeling of FRFR without actually using FRFR monitors.  They are also very comfortable to wear for hours on end.

2. Sony MDR-V6 (~ $80-100)- These have long been the stalwart for low(er) cost audiophiles.  They reproduce sound extremely well, are better than good at basic noise cancelling and are pretty comfortable for long-term wear.

I own 4 pairs of the MDR-V6's and 2 pairs of the DT-880s.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend either of them, both are excellent.
