Grohl once said it is about a bunch of things dealing with sex and heroin use. But he says it's nonsensical and not ment to be completely understood because that's how people viewed teenagers.
Other possibility is how someone is felt left out like some kid at a pep rally.
So many different stories by different people and even different band members. I don't care though.. I still like it
I found how they thought of the name:
Kurt used to date Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail. He would always hug her goodnight and Tobi's band mate, at one point, lead singer Kathleen Hanna would spray paint "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on Kurt's wall. He took it as a complement and he used that as the title for his song. But he had no idea that Teen Spirit was a girls' deodorant. Hanna's band mate and Kurt's then-girlfriend, wore Teen Spirit. At the time the song was released, Kurt had no idea that the brand even existed; when he did find out, he was rather upset that the song had apparently been named after a line of deodorant.
