Plenty of people have a handgun when they are walking and penty of people have a handgun in their car. Especially in cities where carjacking is an issue. Obviously in their home too.

Last year a woman was jogging in a park when approached by two men who made their intentions clear. She pulled a gun and they took off.

Why should I be defenseless? Why not allow me to have a fighting chance? Fuck that.

That jogging woman is 1% of 100%. The others of 99% are on the psychological rehabilitation for rape victims or dead. It's curious because all these carrying gun rambos won't pull up a gun, won't toggle a safety, won't charge and won't shoot in case of real mess. There is a huge difference between shooting empty bottles and this. At its best, you will wound your right foot in the heat than help yourself.

Well, USA is first in the rape rating with 88.8 guns per 100 residents. The risk of being raped in USA is even higher than in Zimbabwe. Fuck, 102.35 murders per one million residents in Russia with only 8.9 guns per 100 residents against only 42.01 murders in USA. No rapes in Liechtenstein and only one murder. By the way, what do we know about Liechtenstein?

USA is first in reported rapes but not rating. We'll have more of many things by actual number since we have like 340mil people. The worst country is South Africa. I read somewhere like 30% of all women have been raped.

Many countries have many under reported rape numbers, especially African and Middle-East countries and China. That site mentions this for rape stats: "Figures do not take into account rape incidents that go unreported to the police."

Yeah, they have lots of little indoor shooting galleries all around the tourist district.  You can literally go in off the street, pay $25 and start shooting.  I chose the $55 package where I fired three guns.  I've never fired a handgun before but apparently I am a good shot!  So from now on I'm changing to pistol on BF.

There is a worthy documentary by Michael Moore called Bowling for Columbine where he states that Amendment Two shouldn't be actual nowadays because the years of Wild West are over and there is no more need to own such a huge amount of firearms in civil society. People who think it might help them to protect themselves and their families are only considered as a bunch of customers of weapons in the interests of that very huge business of the manufacturers, sellers and authorities that lobbying its further well-being. The Northern neighbours from Canada have no such a problem because of wiser politics, I even heard of the fact there are a lot of quiet towns in the country where people don't even lock their doors at night with no guns inside. If the wise government really wants to solve this problem, the authorities would never say "here is a gun, protect yourself", because they will try to disarm or at least reduce the amount of something that might help people to kill each other. You may say people kill people in any way, but using guns they do it much more productively. I repeat, it's just my humble opinion and I don't pretend to be enlightened and don't tell you what to do because it's actually not my business.

Michael Moore, the documentary maker, is not a reliable source.  He sensationalises things to exaggerate his point.  But in terms of American gun ownership, I thought it was not protect yourself against crime but rather to protect yourself against a tyranny because when the people are armed there is a counterbalance to the government.  For this reason it's entirely logical that assault rifles can be owned by citizens.

I was actual for the times of Wild West and civil war. Nowadays those who think the government is not legitimate and ask the others to bring weapons to riot are already in Guantanamo.

The problem is not how many guns.

The U.S. murder rate is 5 in 100,000, which is bad, but I know how to lower it immediately. Stop illegal immigration and close the southern boarder with Mexico. My conclusion is based on simple analysis of government crime statistics.

“The number of criminal aliens in federal prisons in fiscal year 2010 was about 55,000, and the number of State Criminal Alien Assistance Program criminal alien incarcerations in state prison systems and local jails was about 296,000 in fiscal year 2009 (the most recent data available), and the majority were from Mexico.”

Criminal aliens represented 25% of the federal prison population in 2009. The criminal alien federal prison population is almost 39% in 2013. Fiscal year 2009 the GAO reported 10.8 million aliens without lawful immigration status. Since the population of the U.S. was about 306.8 million in 2009, illegal aliens represent about 3.52% of the population.

According to the GAO and the U.S. Sentencing Commission on federal convictions of criminal aliens from fiscal years 2003 through 2009 criminal aliens were arrested, convicted and incarcerated for 25,064 homicides.

Per the FBI, there were 115,717 homicides from 2003 through 2009. Criminal aliens commit 22 percent of all murders in the U.S., while being only 3.52% of the population. From 2003 through 2009 criminal aliens averaged 6266 homicides a year for a murder rate of 58 per 100,000. That is 17 murders a day.

The overall US murder rate drops to 3.4 per 100,000 during the period 2003 through 2009 when criminal aliens are factor out of the murder rate. Murder rates in the US are not determined by how many lawful guns per person are in the US, it is determined by how many criminal aliens are allowed over the boarder. Remember, not all of these homicides are by firearms.

Good info Janet....of course it's much more involved than that...but I never argue gun control or crime stats with anyone from other countries, especially those that have no real individual rights.....like the ability to own a military caliber weapon.
 
The USA is full of other countries "waste" products that have no regard for the laws and are not certainly not vested in this country's future.
It's complemented by some of the smartest and good people too...but the bad always get the publicity.

The right to bear arms has nothing to do with personal protection...that right is inherent for every law abiding and even non-law abiding citizens in the country.  The right to bear arms was specifically written to resist a tyrannical government with like firepower.  Period.

Without researching it to the same extent as you have Janet I would say it is the very much the same here in the UK but we are a lot more accommodating and civilised about it.

Here's a thing :

The cleric that is strongly in the frame for the planning of the recent beach massacre in Tunisia lives in a large house with his family near London.  The rent for the house is paid for by the state and on top of this he is paid more than I am yearly in benefits and disability pay outs again all funded by the state, or in other words by us the tax payers.  To put it bluntly we are paying to have our own citizens gunned down while on holiday by a radical madman in the name of religion, you think you got problems!!!!
