Back to the thread. The Council of Ministers and the Supreme Council of Crimea (it's Southern Ukraine) has been captured by a group of armed people who call themselves as "Russian-speaking self-defence group". It's very strange because they disarmed police inside the building, turned them out of the building and gave them their weapons back. Nobody has been killed or injured. The invaders hoisted the national flag of Russia on the roof of the building and now they keep silence. A few minutes earlier, they let the politicians to come into the building for work. The crowd of protesters outside the building edges closer from civil disorder to riots: 3 dead and 35 injured already. There are at least 3 threads of this gathering: Russian Federation integration, Western Ukraine integration and the last one by the local Islamic inhabitants - they are gathering together and yelling "Allah Akbar".

They are not. I don't bet on the Islamic inhabitants, the majority of Crimea are Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine. Yanukovich (ex-president) asked the Russian officials to provide him personal security. He also said that he is ready to fight back from the Eastern and Southern Ukraine with Russian support. The officials said they can guarantee him his personal security only, that's all. There will be a second wave of violence between pro-Russian southerners and right-wing radical and nationalist westerners soon I guess.

No, Yanukovich is a stupid motherfucker, a thief and a coward. He left to the mercy of fate the special police forces in Kiev: when he had time to put the riots down, he did nothing like he did nothing when he had time to retire. The pro-Russian side of Crimea has nothing to do with Yanukovich and the Russian government doesn't want to support him either, because he has discredited himself greatly. In my humble opinion, the best of what they could do is to hold a referendum in Crimea but the westerners will be disagree.

It seems like one giant cluster fuck From what I read the eastern part of ukraine seems to be relatively pro-russia and the west part isn't. Is that basically what it comes down to? Two sides of the country disagreeing?

It's close to the truth. The Southern part seems to be relatively pro-Russian, the Western is national-socialistic and radical and the Eastern is neutral yet, but Kiev has been already captured by the rioters: they have their own acting president, prime minister, supreme council and militia.
