Time to get a fast Win 7 computer

I’ve recently bought parts for yet another legacy PC. This time with main focus on Windows 7. Why now? I’m securing new W7 compatible hardware before it gets too hard to find, or completely disappears.

One of the primary objectives for this vintage computer is: Acquire the strongest hardware that still has official Windows 7 drivers, in order to put together one of the fastest Win 7 rigs possible with official drivers.
(it could be even more swift, by using more recent hardware with unofficial modded drivers).

It’s a very easy task actually; do some quick research, buy, click the parts together, done.

I’ve always disliked the term “building” a computer. Sounds like some people are real proud of “creating” or “building” their own PC. They didn’t. They clicked finished products together, that were meant and designed with one purpose only: To be clicked together. This and installing OSs is consumer/user computing at one of its most primitive and basic levels, where modding, hacking, coding and actual creation is stepping up the ladder.

It’s not common to gather parts for a home audio system, then connect them, then call it “building”, but it's virtually the same thing.

No, this PC isn’t specifically for Battlefield 1942. I’d have bought it anyway in 2022, even if I never played computer games. I primarily bought the Geforce 3090 for its CUDA abilities, and this rig will serve as an office PC for me.

I’ve been using Vista, 7, 8.1, 10, 11, Linux, and others as supplementary operating systems for ages, but never as the primary ones for extended periods.

Now, I’m more or less done with XP as main OS, The internet browser experience and performance were extremely miserable in the end, using Firefox 52, 360 Extreme or other bootleg community browsers. I probably should’ve switched around 2015, but disliked W7 so much that I just didn’t.

Win 7 normally can’t be properly installed on modern hardware (2018-2022), because hardware from approximately 2018 and on, doesn’t have full W7 drivers (both official and unofficial modded ones do exist for some devices though).

Windows require drivers for hardware to function properly. No drivers will result in nonfunctional hardware. Microsoft has deliberately forced hardware partners like Intel, Nvidia, AMD, etc. to stop driver development for older Windows versions, in order to pressure users to switch to newer versions. It’s despicable behavior.

Why not just use Windows 10 and modern hardware? Because Win 10 sucks big time in my opinion, has a hideous, illogical, bloated, cluttered, unproductive graphical user interface, forced updates, forced reboots, forced too many things, higher latencies in some cases, and many other disadvantages. A hybrid, bastard, automated, oversimplified abomination of an operating system, partly aimed at touch and mobile devices, full of unpleasantries and targeting dumb people.

I’ll stick with Win 7 as main OS as long as possible, just like I did with XP, probably till around 2027. The main problem will be when Firefox drops W7 support, just like they did with XP in 2016. I predict they’ll do it in 6-18 months from now.

Central Processing Unit: 

Intel Core i7-7700K     (released in 2017)     It’s the fastest CPU that has official W7 motherboard drivers. It’s rather weak by 2022 standards. Discontinued and unavailable almost everywhere for years. After an extensive search, I found one of the last brand new and sealed retail ones from an actual webshop in Europe. I’ll probably delid it soon and replace intel’s inferior coverage with a custom nickel-plated copper integrated heat spreader and liquid metal.

Motherboard:

Asus Rog Maximus IX Extreme     (released in 2017)     Also discontinued and unavailable almost everywhere for years. Found a brand new one in retail packaging anyway. The Intel Z270 chipset is the latest with full official W7 drivers. This mobo is the top Z270 model from ASUS. It comes with a custom CPU water cooling block. Several sources stated that normal CPU air cooling couldn’t work on this board and that it was designed for water cooling ONLY! I don’t like being forced to use water cooling, there should be an option for air cooling too. Tried hooking up CPU air cooling anyway, using a case fan header. It works. Don’t believe all you read from official sources on the net.

Power Supply Unit:

Corsair AX1600i     (released in 2018)      Maybe the best ever desktop PSU created. Some might say it’d be overkill for
a PC like this. I prefer quality

Random Access Memory:

G.skill Trident Z Royal Elite. F4-4266C19Q-64GTES. DDR4-4266 CL19-26-26-46 1.50V. 64GB (4x16GB)      (released in 2018)      64 GB is max for this mobo. Wanted a fast 64 GB quad kit than could run at least twice the default stock speed, which is 2166 MHz.

Graphics processing Unit:

ASUS Geforce 3090. ROG-STRIX-RTX3090-O24G-GAMING     (released in 2020)     Geforce 3090 is the fastest GPU that has Win 7 drivers. Geforce 3090 Ti will be released soon, but probably won’t have W7 support. Same with the Geforce 4000 series that likely will launch six months from now. Last W7 Geforce driver is 472.12 from Sept. 2021.

Storage:     

Samsung 870 EVO 1 TB     (released in 2021)     x 4. One of the better SATA SSDs. Probably the last Samsung will ever release. Deliberately picked slow ol’school SATA instead of newer PCIe, for compatibility and ease of use reasons.

CPU cooler:

Arctic Alpine 12 CO. A real cheap and crappy air CPU cooler, similar to Intel’s box ones. Just wanted something quick ‘n’ easy for the initial testing and setup. I may get a normal air cooler soon, like Noctua NH-D15 or whatever. Might even use the custom water cooling block that came with the board one day.

I bought all the parts as brand new in late 2021/early 2022

Overall, this computer is semi-weak and partially outdated, except for the GPU.

I’ll probably also buy an AMD Zen 4 + Geforce 4000 series based system in half a year.

It may even be possible to do an acceptable Win 7 install on it too, with modded drivers.
