you have to train the instinct in 3d space (where the other guy is going / can go ), and learn how to change cameras, the right way, that looks easy, but , it is not.
i have trained in single mode against ai to practice the understanding of space around, long time ago, but it helped a lot.
then , there is the thing of turning quick without losing speed.
these are basics,
when you learn that,
other things come naturally, by watching others, or by discovering them.

Lec, your conf is obsolete, even though it is good for the 13 yr old game, but , bf1942.exe is not the only process running under your task manager. ( which means, for ex. if you have firefox running in the background,) , that itself consumes half of your resources , all programs are updating themselves constantly, asking for more resources ( it s a ploT of IT industry so you must buy a new PC
that is the problem, and new vga won't solve a thing.
buy a new pc, or at least a newer one
or even better
install windows xp sp2, with old programs on it, and it will work like it did back in 2007,
why do you think your old game feels worse then a few years ago
