When I’m in the shower I sometimes think about playing BF42. Anyone do that? I think about a lot of things in the shower. The way you play is how I think I play when I’m in the shower smile when I do play - I’m the guys you hit.

I had something similar a while back and I used this program: https://geekuninstaller.com/download?version=1.5.2.165
I can't remember so much now though, so double check it's OK and everything before installing it.

Thanks, will definitely keep them coming as long as I'm playing and motivated lol. I'm using a bit.ly link and it tracks the clicks which is pretty useful.

I do use tags in the videos, but they aren't displayed in the description. Youtube has moved that feature to the backend unless you're manually entering them in the description yourself.

Thanks for the information about using bit.ly links. It's helpful to know!
I see about the tags, you do use them. I couldn't see them on your latest video but I can see them now.

Edit: I just tested a bit.ly link: works like a charm! Cheers!
Edit 2: Analytics seems to be a premium feature (and I'm a cheapskate).

Thanks Winston, glad you enjoy the videos. You're not wrong about the arrogance lol. I try to keep it directed at the hackusators, complainers, and uninitiated. There's plenty in this forum apparently. It's funny to see what getting killed in a video game will do to someone's mental, so I just rub it in a bit when someone wants to be a bad sport instead of just saying "nice shot" or "gg". I agree, it does spice things up a bit and keep it entertaining.

I really just post the videos to generate visibility for this old game and maybe even teach players some things they would not have known without watching from another experience players perspective. The download link in my descriptions have been used a few hundreds time. Hopefully that has translated to some installs.

That's cool. Promoting this old game is a worthy pursuit. Keep them coming! How do you know if the download link has been used? Does YouTube tell you?
I noticed that you don't put tags in your videos (BF1942, FPS, Battlefield, WW2, etc) . I don't know how much they help or not, but they might.

I like using a joystick because it feels more like I’m actually flying a plane. I was a kid in the 1980s and used to watch Iron Eagle on VHS every weekend and then jump on my family’s Amiga 500 to play some flight simulator games while listening to rock music. And I still do! (Not the VHS part). I’m just a kid at heart and using a joystick is simply more fun. That’s also why I don’t use the view angles very much; because it feels more like flying a radio controlled plane than actually being in the plane. And that is why I suck at dogfighting smile

If some precision is needed ak.a. I'm chasing someone and he doesn't see me, shooting bailers, aa's, mg gunners or wingclipping running infs, then I might use a mouse for a few seconds and get back to keys again.

Main config is W,S,A,D and numpad buttons. C,F,G,V for cameras.

That's cool. They say the best pilots use keyboards only. I don't know if that's true or not. I use a joystick because it feels more 'real', but I'm too rough on it - three of the buttons have stopped working now. But I really enjoy doing sharp turns and stuff like that.

I always enjoy your videos. I like that you put effort into making them good: proper thumbnail, editing, music, decent gameplay, etc. but most of all I like your villain persona. You’re not afraid to be arrogant, and I think that’s something that other games have but BF1942 lacks as everyone is mostly mature now. Ten years ago there were loads of villains. It was like pro wrestling, or a soap opera. The community lacks the off field entertainment now. At least, that’s my feeling. But you’re shaking things up again. It’s like you’ve parachuted in from the console world and you’ve brought that culture with you. IDK, but I think controversy is good to liven things up.

I make an effort to like and comment on your videos. They say that helps with the algorithm. The way I see it, the more people who see the effort you put into this game, and thus realise that BF42 is still alive, the better.

He plays with a larger FOV, that’s why it looks like that

I guess you’d need a fairly large monitor otherwise everything would be too small to see!
It looks wider on the sides but more squished vertically.

Is that the resolution of your monitor?

I have 1920x1080 and it feels normal for me. Sometimes the game randomly switches to the original bf1942 resolution and it feels weird and too square.

The user experience is still young and unintuitive, but that will change as the masses figure out how to integrate LLMs into their day-to-day. We aren’t far away from each of us being able to teach an AI program how to play battlefield and we will have ChatGPT-esque AI playing in our 42 lobbies.

That was one of my first thoughts when I started messing around with ChatGPT - “Can this play BF1942?”

Some mouses have sniper buttons that drop the mouse movement down to 100dpi or something like that. Mine has one but the button is so far away that I have to change my grip to push it - which means I can't use it for sniping!

I only just learnt that you're supposed to aim lower for a headshot, not higher. Is that because the origin point of the bullet is the body and not the head?

#81 Re: BF1942 Discussion » Does anyone know how to change the main menu animation? » 2024-02-25 11:44:01

Thanks! Yeah I never thought about encoding the sound separately but that makes sense. There is sound in the video that I put as a background/intro, but there are a couple of glithcy chirp sounds. I guess encoding separately would make it cleaner. It's good enough for me as it is though.

#82 Re: BF1942 Discussion » Does anyone know how to change the main menu animation? » 2024-02-23 16:45:55

I made a tutorial showing how to convert a video file to .Bik, and then how to change the Battlefield 1942 intro and main menu videos to ones of your choosing.
The video wasn't scripted and the audio is a bit dodgy (perhaps a little loud so beware), and it's a bit long too... but the process works well enough.

Looks like you can encode video and audio to a .bik file using RAD Video Tools, which is free to use. Bink video is a proprietary file format with their own video and audio codecs and Bink 1 format has been reverse-engineered by the FFmpeg project, but only decoding is supported, according to Bink Video Wikipedia article. That means you can play any .bik file with mpv or VLC, for example. FFmpeg project did not add encoding support to .bik file, probably to avoid any legal disputes with RAD Game Tools company.

Sorry not to get back to you yesterday. This is what I used: https://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm

Thanks!

Yes, I'll have a look when I get home. At the time (about three months ago) I didn't have any particular video I wanted to upload I was just curious to know if you could put any video up. I had a few failures along the way but in the end I could change the video. The sound and video quality are not great, but that might be because the source video was too detailed.

#85 Re: BF1942 Discussion » Does anyone know how to change the main menu animation? » 2024-02-22 01:57:41

I changed my main menu background video recently. It wasn't difficult but the hardest thing was finding an MP4 to Bik converter. I found one online that worked. I didn't have a video in mind to use though so I used a stock video of a zen waterfall just as a test and haven't changed it yet. So now when I start BF42 I'm taken to a peaceful forest scene with water flowing and birds chirping - not so appropriate!

I found the audio is buggy though.
