This happens due to resolution/aspect ratio and can't be fixed because the game is very old. However, you can try these options:

You can either use

game.chatOutline 0

command in GeneralOptions.con in your profile folder (set read-only for that con file after editing) which removes outline

or just a lower resolution.
I have smoother fonts with 1600 x 900 on 1920 x 1080 display. Difference in image quality isn't that big, but maybe for me only.

Hey,

Thanks for the reply.  Unfortunately that line isn't present in my Controls.con at all, I only have these lines in the file:

There was something different about my settings on my old PC, because the text looked much better there at the same resolution.  I've tried tolling some of  the 3D settings in the Nvidia Control Panel to see if anything helps, but no luck yet.  I recall that waaaayyy back when BF1942 was new, enabling anti-aliasing caused some text issues, so I thought maybe there's something in there which could be causing it.  But I had anti-aliasing enabled on my old PC with clear text, so...  yeah.  A bit of a mystery still.  If I run across a solution, I'll post here so others may see it.  Thanks!

Hey guys,

I built a new PC and unfortunately I lost some settings for BF1942.  I've mostly got everything back up and running like normal, but the text is blocky and kind of hard to read.  Some setting is different, or I'm missing a modded file which I used to have.  I grabbed a screenshot:

That screenshot actually looks a bit better than in-game.  It isn't horrible, the text is mostly legible, but on my old PC the text was much sharper and easier to read.  Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how to fix it?  Thanks!
