How to deal with flying on a cheap keyboard (non mechanical)

Hi.
There were questions in chat about how to get your cheap membrane keyboard perform better during dogfights.

Problem: This type of keyboards has a limit of how many keys you can press simultaneously. Meaning that if you want to perform a complex maneuvre in your plane, you might not succeed, since your keyboard won't register some of your input.

This is a free simplest solution and testing guidance.

Here is a website that shows you in real time how your keyboard performs i.e. which buttons are pressed

-Try pressing S, D, Down Arrow, Right Arrow. Chances are, you won't be able to due to limits. You get the idea..

SOLUTION:
My solution is to remap the arrow keys to NUM8, NUM5, NUM4, NUM6.  (NUM0 for bombs). These schematics will allow for most combination you need during df. Test for yourself. Extra bonus you get a more even hand position for the adhd bois outthere.

P.S. pic of my old beater keyboard which is a logitech k310 washable low-profile kb that I really like and want to keep as long as possible smile

Re: How to deal with flying on a cheap keyboard (non mechanical)

Early keyboards which were mostly mechanical ,  ie  cherry blue or cherry black.  They typically had limitations on Rollover  ( How many keys can be simultaneously pressed  ( 2-3 keys)  ,   Modern keyboards will have a high rollover.

I'm just saying cheap does not equal non-mechanical ,  all of the old style 90's keyboards were mechanical and can be picked up in discount bins in thrift stores.

Your keyboard should have a 6-key rollover which should suffice for anything you do.

Very nice testing application that you list

Keyboards are like roads with different cross streets,    You might not register all 6 keys on the same avenue.   Move your hand around and you should come up with 6 keys that will register simultaneously.

I digress ,  I found your keyboard listed as ( less then 6 on rollover )

   https://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/11 … NKRO)-list

  The answer is simple

No one should be on a keyboard with less then a 6-key rollover     : )

Place keyboard in oven ,  Bake at 420 for 4 hours!

Re: How to deal with flying on a cheap keyboard (non mechanical)

Thanks,

That's why I have specified that this tutorial is for non-mechanical keyboards. Since most membrane keyboards I had , had the same issue and mb the same internal routing.

And also why I gave an example that a 6-key rollover is sometimes not achievable in certain combinations.

EDIT: It's hard to get rid of mine, since I like the design and feel very much. Can't get the same for cheap with modern ones. Especially, since I have the need to have an additional russian layout.

But it's good to know about the 6 kro/

It's probably a chinese underdeveloped product with cut corners and lack of attention to key feel, plastic type etc. We have the same type of keyboards here in Moldova, however imo it's not worth. If I would really want a gaYmer keyboard I would go ahead and spend a 150$ on a Logitech and be sure it's a decent product.
Thanks for taking the time to look, though I think it's rly not necessary, sicne I have countered the rollover with remapping and it DOESN'T affect me anymore.
