Hello all!
I recently dug up an old gaming rig that still has decent specs for running as a low occupancy bf1942 server. At least I think it does. It sports the following specs:
Dual Core Pentium 2.8GHz
2 GB Ram non-ecc
120GB HDD(likely 4800rpm... didn't even check)
Win XP SP2(as fully updated as possible w/o installing SP3)
It has a vidcard and soundcard and optical drive. No real need to state specs for just a server I feel.
My questions are many, but lets start with the most basic. I have a couple of the original discs for bf1942(yes, I saved them : D ),
with the original cd keys. I also have access to the Origin downloaded files from a couple laptops laying around. Is there a difference
in which version would be better suited to running a dedicated server? My assumption is that they are identical, once you eliminate the
reliance on Origin @ start up.
And as a follow-up question, after I install whichever version is preferential, which one of the server "patches" should I then install in order to make the server visible to the world? In other words, on your team-simple dot org/download page, you list several different options for Battlefield 1942 servers. Can you please explain the differences between the three windows based server patches that are available? Which would expose the server to the most clients? What changes from v1.61 to v1.612?
My ultimate plan is to run a server with a maximum of ten player slots and a map rotation of three or four maps that I plan to mod a bit.
Your advice is greatly appreciated!!
Cheers

10 Players... hmm
> With Punkbuster, V1.61 Origin Players can't login there. But perhaps less Teamkills, trolling around etc.
(The other question is, if there are enough players who have non origin compatibility.)
> 1.612 is Origin and CD Compatible, as far i know.
> If you want to make a NonCDKeyProofServer, there's a service for that, i have it and i would know, where to download. But i don't know, if it's possible to ban disturbers, Teamkillers, etc. with that service.
> A helpfull tool is BfServermanager

For as example Norton Internet Security or NAV you have to make a new rule for it.
...
The best would be, you ask tuia about these things.
...
The second Battlefield 1942 v1.61 Retail patch should be the AfterGamespyShutdown Patch.

Thanks so much for the swift reply! That begins my knowledge base.
Since it is a smallish server and would likely be non-pervasive(eg: I will turn it off during slow hours), I don't feel I need PunkBuster.
Never liked it, to be honest. I have never, ever employed a "cheat" in a video game, and perhaps I am naive to think most people don't,
but I will be present in the server most of the time.
Also, the ten slot limit is to ensure the gameplay is enjoyable for anyone globally. I have tested my bandwidth and I know it will support that many with me on as well. As a reference, I play frequently on the "Norlyset" server and that gave me the idea for the ten slot limit.
Cheers! And again, thank you for sharing the knowledge.

Bad news... there are sometimes people using cheats...
Mostly it's NoFog or the one, where they see also the enemys on the minimap.
But outthere in the fields is one players, he smells them against the wind. He is like a fully automatic detector. If you suspect once somebody, ask...

f Yeah, there seem to be always some people out there who will use any exploit they can to get an unfair advantage over their competitors.
I find it hard to understand how this is fun for them. I equate this behavior to those people who enjoy "trolling" in forums and chat rooms, etc.
How do those people find enjoyment in being so counter-productive?? Similarly, if a person is cheating with a "no fog" or map hack, isn't it obvious that their accomplishments, scores and medals, have no value? I truly don't understand how that can be satisfying.
But whatever... I have only encountered a small handfull of people who cheat. If I see them, I will boot them. : ) And karma will eventually hunt them down and give them acne. Or erectile dysfunction.
I suggest:
Download: BF1942 server v1.6 and install.
Now download: BF1942 server update v1.61 and install it.
Now replace the server.exe with one of those:
For linux (better than windows server actually )
Linux all clients + working keyhashes
For windows
Windows all clients + working keyhashes
To stop the cd key check block port 29910 udp
Now download server manager 2.0 (not 2.1)
Ports to open:
TCP Ports: 28900 (GameSpy TCP List), 14667 (BlackBagOps remote server manager), 4711 (BF1942's remote console)
UDP ports: 14567, 14690 (All-Seeing Eye), 23000-23009, 27900 (Gamespy heartbeat)

Yes, that's about it. You don't need to have Battlefield 1942 game installed to run a BF1942 server. Download "Battlefield 1942 v1.612 Windows server with keyhashes and accepting all client versions", so all players can join your server, from Origin or Retail BF1942. BFServerManager is recommended to easily set up and manage your server.

But, why BFSM 2.0 and not 2.01?

...
I think it had to do something with in game administration
...
But with 2.0 an unauthorisized player can access admin commands, with 2.01 not.
---
2.01
* Fixed intermittent bug allowing non-authorised players to issue in-game admin commands
* Users must now have access to Players dialog page to use kick/ban in-game admin commands
...
For Linux it's 2.1 http://www.bf-games.net/downloads/categ … _bfrm.html

I am talking about BFServerManager 2.0 Final (patched by tuia)
And I used it and unauthorised players cannot acces the admin commands
...
You're recommendation first was 2.0
Then it was not bad, that i was asking. Do you have a link?

Thanks guys for all the helpful pieces of advice... it is greatly appreciated! I'm about ready to start building this. I do need to clarify a
couple of things though. I'm unclear on whether to follow Zero's suggested plan:
Download: BF1942 server v1.6 and install.
Now download: BF1942 server update v1.61 and install it.Now replace the server.exe with one of those:
For linux (better than windows server actually )
Linux all clients + working keyhashesFor windows
Windows all clients + working keyhashes
Or if Tuia's seemingly streamlined method would work just as good:
Download "Battlefield 1942 v1.612 Windows server with keyhashes and accepting all client versions", so all players can join your server, from Origin or Retail BF1942.
My plan is to build just a dedicated server(no full game install). So do I need to progressively build the server from downloading and insalling v1.6 + v1.61 + v1.612? Or can I just accomplish the same goal through simply downloading the v1.612 from http://team-simple.org/download/BF1942_ … lients.zip
Thanks again, Arkos, Zero and Tuia for all the input.
Cheers

I found this:
BFServerManager v2.0 (final) for Windows patched:
http://team-simple.org/download/BFServe … atched.zip
MD5: 319CF806A36F6F706D742AE3DBEF7835
BFRemoteManager v2.0 (final) patched:
http://team-simple.org/download/BFRemot … atched.zip
MD5: 7F60038C4AE1D06819DCA86243D138AE
Note: I've used BFServerManager v2.0 (final) instead of BFServerManager v2.01, because BFServerManager v2.01 has a bug, which can't handle correctly player names with non-ASCII code.
The above links and text are from a forum post by Tuia on the bfmods site. I'm not sure what the long string of alpha-numeric characters represent after each link.

Tuia gave you a link to the patched .exe (which you need) but you also need the server files.
So you do have to download the 1.6 and the 1.61 patch, after that you need to replace the BF1942_w32ded.exe with this one: Keyhash all clients

It represents the MD5 hash. (don't worry about it, it is to check the integrity of the file)
Here is a server manager guide: BFSM

BFServerManager v2.01 does not recognize some characters, for example "ç", in admins names, it's a regression bug.
Disco Joe, just follow what Zero wrote:
Download: BF1942 server v1.6 and install.
Now download: BF1942 server update v1.61 and install it.
Then, get BF1942 Windows server v1.612 from team-simple.org/download and overwrite BF1942_w32ded.exe and you have your BF1942 server ready.
I have some resources left on my vps I might as well host something too, I used to host a server before in which I renamed the ai and people started talking to them lol
