Hi all,
Some monthes ago, TeamSimple opened a specific "tank" server. Called "Tanks a lot". It was a great idea, offering to people to train in tank fighting.
I wondered if it would be possible, and interesting, to create a "dogfight" server. As "Tanks a lot" runs Aberdeen in a loop, there's a choice for the dogfight server :
-Coral Sea, the classic one, could be modded with "autorepair" carriers
-Gazala TDM, modded without land vehicles/flaks...
I think the choice of Gazala is interesting because of the fog -further than in Coral- and hangars allow to land and repair. Besides it's a wide map with a lot of relief, that may always be interesting for dogfighters...
Anyway, planes could be :

:: bf109 / Zero / yak9 - Axis
:: Corsair / Mustang / Spitfire - Allies
Could also be a way for dogfighters to avoid trolls in overall maps.

I don't think that will be popular mode, but suggestion is interesting.
Anyway, + El Alamein and Philippines (that was modded with two carriers per team) to maplist.
And.. why without flaks, eh?
Just so that the map remains a pure dogfight map... But we can debate about this point, of course...

What about making "Flettner Arena" map? I also want dogfights, but on helicopter, or heli vs plane.

Because Allies have more choices in planes than Axis...
We can also think about all kinds of planes on both sides...

The problem with "new maps" (I mean maps created by players) is that most of new players won't download it. I experienced it. It's better to stay on classic maps...
Having read all that people said (even what Telrin said ) I would suggest :
1. (to Telrin) The aim is not to have 60 players on the server, so if it's not very popular, it's better.
2. Flaks, ok in the main bases. No runway in range (always trolls). No vehicle, no flak, nothing anywhere else. 3 or 4 flaks a base would be ok.
3. Large death bubbles around the runways.
4. Completely disable parachute (I know it's possible in bf2, I don't know for bf1942). Instant death at bail (Score malus wouldn't prevent from trolls)
5. All planes on each side, it will avoid teamstackers who prefer allied or axis planes.
6. Maybe limit the number of players to 30 or 40 (let us see the sky)
7. Mod soldier weapons with only wrenches.
8. Any map you choose, please make it TDM.
9. There must be a hangar (or at least a way to repair a plane without bailing). Auto-repair runways ?
10. Make something, Nameless to die every 10 kills

SSM = server-side modding, I meant that everything in that map can be done via SSM and players won't need to download anything
I understand SSM, but I thought you were speaking about a new map. If it's a classic map, then no problem. But I still believe that overall condition for a good "special dogfight map" are :

Death bubbles in planes map it is not a good idea. I believe it is possible to SSM all that you proposed. One thing that can be added is to have planes spawned high up in the air to avoid airfield raping.
I thought about it, but I think it would ruin the charms of flying... Besides I'm not sure it would be easy to choose the plane you want : You select a spawn point, but it will give you a random plane if you don't know where exactly to spawn.
The aim is to have the choice between all kinds of planes, even bombers (except B17 and JU88A -and even, why not-). If someone wants only hunters and spawn wrong in a bomber... it's a shame...

I think best alternative is to spawn planes high in the air, and have some 3 or 4 spawns you can choose to start with a fighter or bomber plane.

+1 but we have to consider the bailing malus as well : bailing from AA would make the same as bailing from a plane... Or it can be modded too ?

Repair bubbles don't prevent from base attacks in usual Battle of Britain...
Personnally, I prefer choosing the plane I want to ride in. Keep planes on the ground. Give each team 3 or 4 flaks that can't aim planes, make them "bailable", and everything will be fine. Everyone can choose his plane, Make of it a pure DF server... It's easy, just follow the steps I wrote above.

Please, no death or repair bubbles. You have already spoiled one map like Battle of Britain where it takes too much time to shoot a plane down because of low hit ratio. But it's not the worst thing there. The worst things is repair bubble at runways: when you almost shot the enemy, he just flies over the runway and it helps him to get 100 hit points again.

The air plane spawn would be much more preferable for this server.
P. S. And one more thing I forgot to say... At Battle of Britain, the bomber climb rate is even higher than the fighter plane climb rate. When I drive a bomber there, I just go up like a rocket and nobody can get me there.
