The last time ive played v1.4 was just a quicktest while i installed the game (i have v1 on cd and had to patch it one patch after the other) so i started a coop game and for some reason used sniper kit (witch i normally suck with) and all of a sudden it was one-shoot - one-kill situation. I didnt think much of that just then, but rather after i had fully updated everything and sniping was way harder again. I dont know what changed, but something was done to the game between patches. An old friend once said that they had nerfed the BAR in some patch "it used to be much more effective" or something like that, but i guess it could be an overall situation depending what class one is used to play as.

edit: found a list of all different patches to the game. i haved toyed with the idea of setting up a server with an earlier version just for curiosity, but would need to know if there is any interest from other players. i doubt there is.

one way around the crash problem i think could be using a passworded server, that would suck a bit ofcourse, but you would propably only get some few players that really is interested in the game anyway.

there is a way to  use keyhashes as a whitelist, so could be one way to do it.

as you propably know already, linux bf42 server has something running that takes ca 15% cpu constantly players or no players in it, i believe this is allocated network resources of some kind that has a fixed value. the windows version of bf42 server starts with 0% cpu
so if my theory is right the strain should be much harder on a linux machine when there is a lot of players as it cant scale up those particular resources. that being said this is just me theorising, i dont really know linuz sustems that well

i have tried using windows in rented vps servers running bf42 server and inside the vma it uses 0% cpu (no players), but the vma itself is drawing a hefty 50% cpu at this configuration (really sucks)

the best performance ive ever got from bf42 server was a dedicated xenon with windows xp, it was in fact such big difference in ingame feeling that some players insisted that the plane engines was modded for more higher torque and speed even that was not the case.

Im thinking it wouldnt be illegal if the game was allowed to download mods or upgraded patchfiles from a separate server, one can do wonders with some simple code snippets.

free from memory then, the 1.6 patch was a big update and had new maps and stuff like punkbuster in it, then some guy (luigi aremma?) found a serious (crash?) bug so they corrected that (in the .exe only?) so the rest of the files should be the same as before that. Meaning that it works to use the 1.6 in a never server if the server itself allows it.

This is to my understanding pretty much just some setting in the server code, the ax server allows for the 1.6 version as the owner has the knowhow to fix  bugs himself.

v1.6.jpg

ive been thinking about the idea to try and make a "earlier version" for a while, that feeling that was in the 1.4 version of the game was pretty neat.

I have seen some mentioning of the linux server making in old forum thread, the gist of it was that it performed (noticeable?) worse then the windows server when it was released. Back in ca 2004 every cpu cycle counted.

Something im curious about is macintosh pushing into ARM territory, especially Rosetta 2 with ahead-of-time compilation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahead-of-time_compilation. It would be nice if this could someday work with any standard ARM unit out there.

In some benchmarks, x86-64-only programs performed better under Rosetta 2 on a Mac with an Apple M1 SOC than natively on a Mac with an Intel x86-64 processor.

Non-isometric video settings give me nausea. How can you even fly like that anyway?

non isometric? what does that mean?

The game is using a widescreen-resolution for rendering, probably 16:9 ratio,  but the recording actually seems to have a 4:3 ratio.
If the settings were isometric then distances between 2 points would be preserved at rotation of the camera. But you can see how things get stretched in the corners and are squeezed together at the sides.
It's uncomfortable to look at. I can just hope this happened as a result of post-processing because if you actually play like that it will make flying very difficult.

Our brain isn't really meant to deal with a non-isometric environment.

are you sure it isnt the point of view setting? anything else than 1 will make the same effect i think.

first you try to fuck the server then you want to play the server, sound contraproductive as f**k. but seriously you seem to have the understanding of toddler if you think nameless is any more power than papershuffler to this server. im still waiting for you to attack my server, but i guess you cant afford that more than one time in your lifetime.

Ivé played with the idea and one solution could be to have the game files on a central server (tried that), the problem is to find a good enoug protocol to use to get enough speed out of it, most cloud servers running linux and its slow to pair with windows filesystem. Just takes forever to start,

Another way is if one could brake it up into segments using symlinks to check for map/patches, and keep the cloud volume small/faster this way. Symlinks should not be that hard to do i think, searchpaths is defined in the .exe and the game do have support for DNS

edit:

Crazy you guys have all public ips. Ephemeral port mapping is pretty much standard in Europe and public ips for private end-users are rare in Germany. Either the US phone companies bought way too many IP4 early on or lots of people don't actually have internet.

In windows 7 you need to use compability mode for server and BFSM (not sure if its same for win 10) i usually set it to windows xp service pack 3 and i also use "run as admin" and that seems to work fine.

According to my isp i can have 5 different IP adresses, i have only tested up to three and that worked, so its different for everyone.
first, 22000/udp is for lan-game and doesnt need to be open to internet.
The two standard ports you need to open is udp 14567 (game connetct port) and 23000 (server info port)

Its hard to know exactly why you cant see the server from home without knowing your exact configuration, but the most common problem is the NAT problem i wrote about in my previous answer.
First time i experienced this same problem was around 2005, but since then i have moved on to rent servers, its a lot easier to use in general.

edit: there is a website made by the guy who built the new "gamespy" service, you can use it to see if your server is showing up as it should. http://master.bf1942.sk/

Its propably because you are inside the same subnetwork, seems like home-routers network address translation (NAT) cant coop with it.

In short its an old problem, easiest to ask a friend if he can see the server, or use another tool like hlsw
