I feel something strange when I dogfighting on this server like it has some irregular technical characteristics of planes: I mean the rate of climb, speed and the deflection for shooting ahead. I am not paranoid and I also know it depends on the ping and speed of a plane that I trying to shoot down but something is still wrong for me and sometimes I can't even hit the plane, I would have easily been able to kill earlier on the other servers. Could somebody explain to me?

I have the same problem, i think it started with the stupid routing changes when they started to push out internet television. I asked an "expert" panel once but i only got answer thats it propably loadbalancing from the ISP.

some pictures to illustrate what i mean

stable routing

constantly changing routing

nämeless is right, you could just swap xp for win7. The inbuilt windows 7 firewall should have enough features for your needs, bf servers runs fine on win7 to so it may be the easiest way to go.

you could also consider running a linux live-cd combined with a usb memory for setting etc.

I've finally finished hacking a BF1942 client v1.61 to be able to connect to all BF1942 servers v1.612. This means, with this client executable you'll be able to play in all v1.612 servers without running Origin or having to sign for an Origin account. EA won't be glad about this. tongue
Best of all, you'll be able to use the widescreen fix.

That is great news! I have been avoiding playing in origin servers up to now.

Well i think its interesting to see the development, i dont think bf1942 will ever die totally. Battlefield bad company is a much newer game but has less players just as a comparison.

Yeah it would be nice, would be easier to use and manage just one server instead of keeping up different version.

you can add ladders but they will be invisible, you can use something visible to mark out where they are tho. There is code for jump plates and teleporters and such to but thats more kindergarten stuff i think.

I think its hard to mod that map without changing the concept of it.

What is your server monitor timer settings?  I have mine at max value and it takes rather long time before the server restarts

PktFilter is similar to Iptables, but not as powerful. Another alternative is WIPFW. PktFilter and WIPFW have no graphical user interface (GUI), though.

I just installed WIPFW on my box and i think it works great, didn´t even have to reboot the system. Also there is a simple GUI to this program, haven´t gone into depts with it but its works perfect for what i´m using it for.

edit: the gui is a separate download and i think was a beta release

Im just glad if i can hit anything at all smile

For me the angle thing is very useful if im in a destroyer battling a sub, spot on its enough with like 4 torpedos to sink the ship, but if i can turn it enough it can take up to 10-12 torpedo hits + if theres time to repair it can take even more.

For most of the armored vehicles there is an AngleFalloff value to take into consideration

"AngleFalloff
Basically, if you hit a target dead on (instead of at an angle) you'll do maximum damage. Otherwise, you'll do partial damage (the formula for AngleFalloff is cosine(angle), where an angle of 0 is a straight on hit, which would yield a cosine(0) = 1, and an angle like 89 would be a barely missed graze off the surface, which would yield a cosing(89) = almost 0). "

Seems to be hard to find some nifty software for windows, comodo is good but a bit heavy just to do one thing with, then theres PktFilter which i guess is the equivalent to IPtables

Maybe PeerGuardian or PeerBlock could be an alternative, havent tried them myself so im not sure

I just started one today smile was using wine before but it had awful performance.

edit: it would be very nice to be able to use the "old" version with the wide-screen patch, if i use custom resolution on the origin version it get stretched and when you fly and turns ingame everything keeps changing shape and it gets me nauseous to the point i almost puke hmm

You are right tuia, i may have spoke too soon, the microsoft send error reports was active so its probably why it did not restart for me.

That is sweet! It would save me and others a lot of trouble if we were able to use a linux environment to host.

This new version really needs a widescreen patch. Its hard to get back to "small screen" so i prefer to play the old bf1942. Its crazy tho, i made a server just for testing out stuff with this new version, and a few minutes later the server was full.
