I found how they thought of the name:
Kurt used to date Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail. He would always hug her goodnight and Tobi's band mate, at one point, lead singer Kathleen Hanna would spray paint "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on Kurt's wall. He took it as a complement and he used that as the title for his song. But he had no idea that Teen Spirit was a girls' deodorant. Hanna's band mate and Kurt's then-girlfriend, wore Teen Spirit. At the time the song was released, Kurt had no idea that the brand even existed; when he did find out, he was rather upset that the song had apparently been named after a line of deodorant.
