Dunning-Kruger effect, in psychology, a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general.
The funny thing about Dunning-Kruger effect is that the effect itself is often misrepresented and the overconfidence of the low performers wasn't actually all that drastic. They also did not use complicated topics in the research, for example I might overestimate my ability to spot a pattern, but it's unlikely that I would do the same with quantum physics
While I'm not a psychologist I would wager that the effect is strongest with simple topics and maybe complex topics that have a lot of emotional baggage included. At the moment many people seem to be experts with the situations in Ukraine or Israel and yet probably would not claim to have extensive knowledge about statistics, politics, history and so on.
As a casual player I did not notice much difference, but truthfully I did not put too much focus into testing either. The gameplay was definitely not worse either, so if the more experienced players feel like the patch is an improvement and the rest of us plebs won't notice it, sounds like it's a net positive anyway.
Even without the high precision mode the qol updates are great, nice work!
Off topic, I think it would be more fruitful to keep the discussion in the thread related to uuuz's patches rather than to speculate on the legitimacy of some of the players and their contributions.
Cool theory. Come back and have a game on simple after you're done fantasizing. Reg is normal on simple
To clarify, I wasn't complaining about gameplay on simple. To me it seems about the same as before, barring the period some months back with constant connectivity issues. The feeling of slightly more consistent regs on MoonGamers is subjective as well and not something I care about much. The main reason I sometimes play there instead of simple is that it's more populated or I just don't feel like playing the current map.
The point of my post was that trying to fix perceived issues by tweaking the local system is likely to be fruitless and that most likely causes would be network-related (or PEBKAC).
It's probably correct that the local latencies have an effect on the hit registrations and especially to the overall smoothness of the game. Still, with a game this old I'd assume that with average or even relatively low-end PC the latencies are negligible, with the OS being the most relevant factor.
Playing a game old enough to drink over a network and focusing on the local system sound like micro-optimizations with diminishing returns to me. Sure, some tweaks might improve gameplay, but most people don't have the know-how or motivation to tinker with the system.
As the Estonian boys mentioned, one can also see whether the problem is local or not by playing on another server and seeing if the issues persist. For myself, the hit registrations and gameplay are usually more consistent on MoonGamers, it's just somewhat annoying to compensate for the high ping.
That said, I do feel like blaming some undisclosed patches/mods is speculative as well, when the real problem could also be some routers/switches working strangely or other network-related issues, considering that some people seem to be more affected than others. Might be useful to try moving the server to different providers/data centers, but that is quite an effort and tuia is running the server on his own dime even as is. I certainly wouldn't bother
Seems to be working now, cheers!
Hello,
I seem to get automatically kicked when attempting to join the simple server. I haven't played for a couple weeks so I don't exactly know when the issue began. It's been happening for a week at least though.
I don't recall having egregiously broken the server rules, my in-game name is the same as the forum name.
