How to record gameplay video

A quick tutorial on how to record Battlefield 1942 gameplay or any other game with best possible quality and minimal impact in frame rate. We'll be using MSI Afterburner program to record our gameplay, which is a free alternative to Bandicam and Dxtory, which are very good game recorders, although not freeware.
Get the latest MSI Afterburner version, right now version 4.0.0. Then, install both MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server:

5283444Capture-1.jpg

After it's finished installing, we'll download the best 2 free VfW codecs, a lossless codec (meaning no quality loss when encoding video, bigger file size) Ut Video Codec and a lossy codec (loses some quality, like JPEG format for pictures, but you get much smaller video size, much better compression) x264. Download both codecs and install them.

Now, let's start configuring MSI Afterburner, click Settings button at bottom:

7896003Capture-2.jpg

Click Video Capture tab:

9810000Capture-3.jpg

And now choose a hotkey to start video capturing (I selected HOME key), for video format pick VFW compression (click ellipsis button and pick UtVideo RGB codec), container format Matroska MKV (old AVI format has some limitations but it's more supported by video players), frame size full frame, framerate 30 FPS (you may pick 60 FPS or higher if your computer is powerful enough) and choose where you want to save your recorded videos in Videos folder:

9821167Capture-4.jpg

Scroll down in that window to Audio capture properties and we'll select our audio source to capture in-game sound. This is the trickiest part, at least for me, choose WASAPI capture device (for Windows 7 or above) and you have to enable Stereo Mix, first. Check also this link for more information. You may choose your microphone as a second audio source to record your voice (I chose not).

Now, let's configure RivaTuner...

(to be continued ...) tongue

Re: How to record gameplay video

Yesterday i used "Shadowplay" which is inside "Geforce experience". (770GTX)

The advantage against fraps is, that it doesn't slow down your FPS/gameplay and the quality is great. But it's a good choice to save the video to another hardisk. So it doesn't slow down the System or the Game. The video is MP4, hardware encoded by the nVidia Graficcard itself.

Geforce GTX 980  (Maxwell)       Geforce GTX 1080(Pascal)

Re: How to record gameplay video

It's uploading...

What i saw... the 480P videos are not so good. I guess it's better higher resolutions and lower bitrate

As reference here an FrapsVideo encoded with MeGui. 1600x1024 @60Hz. (Set quality to 720P)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvgLU62f-gk

The problem with fraps is, it set your ingame Fps also to 60Hz. The Gameplay is a bit more laggy as with 100Hz, but perhaps it's also the Capturing itself.

Shadowplay 720P Test Simple USA

(The laggy thing is because of USA)

(Because of below mentioned reasons, this video is in wrong aspect ratio.)

Re: How to record gameplay video

I have been running this and finally made my first video couple days ago.  I only needed about 5 seconds so I went online and downloaded this free program to cut the video down to size.

http://avidemux.en.softonic.com/

You find the part in the video you want...move the "A" slider to start it there...then move the "B" slider to end it
and...save off the new clip!!

Different formats available...i had to do something like mp4mux or something to upload to IMGUR which I use for my photos...  don't know what is needed for YouTube or other formats.

and don't worry..thats not a joke link

Re: How to record gameplay video

Ok. It's like this...

When you choose the predefinied setting "high" it uses Ingame Resolution. When you choose manually configuration, as example 720p or 1080 and you use another in game, the aspect ratio will be changed. Also it can screw up your video Resolution, as you can see it on the 1st video Simple USA.

I played now 1920x1080@85Hz and the video was 1920x1080 60Hz (Shadowplay's predefinied "High")

Re: How to record gameplay video

Ok, this is also important.

If you start Shadowplay first and then BF1942, Shadowplay will capture in 800x600, which is MainmenuResolution.

One way is to change MainMenu's.con inside Bf1942 SettingsFolder or you start first the game, login to server, switch to Desktop and start Shadowplay then.

The good thing is, you can upload the videos after you captured them

The bad. They are a bit bigger, i guess.

...

Besides... i deactivated all other things in Geforce Epx. also search for games, Drivers, i didn't made an account. I only use Shadowplay.

Re: How to record gameplay video

If you use shadowplay whit nvdia geeforce I am shure you can..Go in the setting of audio.

Go to the swicht that you turn shadowplay on  (big swicht) then go to lower right corner name audio, click on it you will see microphone option.

For some reason my ShadowPlay only records at 50 fps even though it's set to 60 and I dunno why D:

Can shadowplay work with ATI? Only bandicam has seemed to be decent for me without lagging me down too much but I'm still  looking for something better.

Re: How to record gameplay video

No.

But AMD Gaming Evolved Client manages this the same way i guess.

(I watched the video and it seemse it's the same as shadowplay).

https://youtu.be/Qt512tuNOto

and i found a video made last month, but perhaps you read first about Evolved client

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fAr15Ag4V4

...

Yes. the settings are just the same... Shadowplay and raptor (Which is now Evolve i guess.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCX9xLAvFX8

...

At the end, i guess it's a good advice to capture the videos to another (separat) harddisk.

Re: How to record gameplay video

Also interesting... The framedrops due Fraps is only because of the nonencoded large files of fraps and saving them on a slow harddisk.

If you fraps on a fast harddisk or an SSD there are nearly no framedrops.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJnExaQOKRs

The good thing on the two other solutions, you can upload it directly. It semse also the AMD Files are a bit more compact. I guess due the optimization of Gamesettings.

Also nice is, that you can use Raptr with Nvidia Graficcards, if i'm right. Perhaps it changed since AMD bought raptr or is it only a cooperation?
