Internet is "slow" on gigabit internet

Long story short... I have gigabit internet. I'm not getting nowhere near the 900+ they say I should. My laptop gets like 650 down and 700-800 upload. That's fine. But my desktop only gets like 150 down and 50-100 up! Which is fast but still! If I'm supposed to get a certain speed then I should at least get close! I called tech support  yesterday and they sent a guy out when I'm at school when I told them I wouldn't be home ffs. Anyway, they replaced the ONT outside because they were getting slow speeds when directly connected to that. They fixed that and he got normal speed. When I got home I tested it on speedtest.net and the internet company's speedtest site too...still the same! I call and they had a guy who was doing a job nearby stop here. He did tests and everything. This guy says the only way I'll get "gig speeds" (which he explained for like 5 damn mins was like 940mbps after I said I know a dozen times) he said the only way I get it is if I only run in safe mode ffs! Anyway, he showed me and yea, laptop jumped much higher (but only to the 650 or so -.- but the desktop only went to 250mbps download in safe mode and still 100-150 in normal mode! He then said he didn't know and it could be ports or because my desktop is old or whatever and didn't know what to do ffs. All he knows is that his laptop got 940down and up when he connected to ONT and also when connected to my modem/router... but he was only in safe mode. Idiot lectured me on all kinds of shit that isn't even relevant.

How do I fix this? Anyone know?

I have Windows 7. My motherboard (asus a8n sli-premium) has a built in Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller. It is wired to the modem with a Cat6 ethernet cable (I tested 2 separate cables and he tested with his own)

I can't believe I've never done a speedtest with my desktop since having this internet. I could've figured this out sooner -.-

When you start > Taskmanager on PC > Show all users > sort by CPU > is there any programm which uses a lot of CPU/Memory/Network load in Idle Mode?

Re: Internet is "slow" on gigabit internet

Lots of parameters that affects the speed, but one easy program to try is TCP Optimizer, so maybe start there.

Re: Internet is "slow" on gigabit internet

...

Start TcpOptimizer as admin, (needed), and don't switch the InetSpeedLever to 100+ Mbit (no need to).

Just choose somehow 70 Mbit and then click "Optimal" and save it, restart PC and test your speed again.

Everything works except the autotuninglevel command. I get "The following command was not found: int tcp global autotuninglevel=normal."

Arkos, nothing runs high with CPU, memory, or network usage on idle.

Hilly, I use speedtest.net as well.

Bud, Arkos, I use that too.

Re: Internet is "slow" on gigabit internet

the browser itself takes alot of cpu power on sites like speedtest.net, and it can only use one thread (cpu core) so thats a limiting factor, its also limited to the amount of connections the browser itself can make.

If you really want to know your connection speed, ill say better try a bitorrent program and download something with a lot of seeders, there is Linux dvd torrents and such that is perfect for this.

edit: there is program from speedtest.ner that is a bit nicer for the cpu, might be worth trying https://www.speedtest.net/apps/windows

Different browsers give me different results. Firefox says about 150/70. Opera and Vivaldi says about 200/200.

Tested downloading a few diff linux torrents from different places using Deluge. Max I get is 2.7 MiB/s

Re: Internet is "slow" on gigabit internet

...

You know, the S939 is really outdated. I have also 2, running both, one with an Opteron, but i never use them since long time.

There are some cheap solutions where you have plenty more power.

A used Phenom X4 for some dollars or a new Pentium, ... as example.  Both would be like day and night vs. a S939.

Btw. If i'm not wrong, you have 2 LAN on this board. Just use the other one to test.

And another option would be to update the Lan Driver. (Did you check the settings in the enhanced section of the card itself?)

But first use the other LAN.

Btw. If i'm not wrong, there was also a bug, if you use both Lans at the same time. Just deactivate the non Used.

...

Or in 9 month, you can change to Ryzen 3xxxG.

...

Btw. I just remember, ... i had the same issue in LAN. I never reached the full speed in HomeNetwerk, which is a plattformthing, i guess. I had also somehow max. 250-300Mbit or so.

If you have some PCI Card installed, you could look, that the don't share IRQ with a LAN Adapter. You can find the list in the manual.

And deactivate non used components in Bios. Like 1394 serial and parallel port.

...

I give you an advice... by some occasion x4-phenom 9xx with Mainboard, 8-16Gb memory, if you get one for some dollars and set your windows 7 on a small new bought 256GB SSD.

...

Re: Internet is "slow" on gigabit internet

Usually ISP's have their own speedtest on their site, for example Comcast/Xfinity has one and comparing it to speedtest.net, it sometimes tends to give more accurate results. Maybe try what ever speedtest your ISP has (if they have one)... just an idea

I know.. I know... it's old. I'm building funds to eventually get a new one but other things take precedence.

Yes, it has 2 LAN ports. One is the Marvell Yukon and the other is the NVIDIA nForce networking controller. Each give the same result. I don't use both. Ive tried with the other disabled. Drivers for them are updated. I went into advanced settings and made sure the Speed & Duplex settings is set to Auto Negotiation. I've tried just setting it to 1.0 Gbps full duplex, same results.

Re: Internet is "slow" on gigabit internet

I just saw the prices for X4 Phenoms in USA. Forget that.

Buy a Pentium G4560, a cheap Board. It would be the smarter choice. (Money/Price).

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/I … 3892vs2935

And it depends on your Graficcard. The other possibility would be a Ryzen 2200G

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/I … 2vsm441832

...

Some Crucial Mx500 256GB SSD, a new cheap Board, and a CPU and 8GB Memory and a BeQuiet Pure Power 400-550 Watt. (Depends on the Graficcard. For integrated Ryzen, some higher clocked Memory would be the right choice.

It's like day and night vs. a S939. And you would save a lot of eletricity costs per year.

...

Before 2 weeks, i don't remember who, told me, he bought a Ryzen 1700X for somehow 115.- Euro.

Avoiding only the Bluetooth driver is recommended.

If the harddrive is slow it could bogger down the transfer speed too. Gigabit fiber is a maximum of 125 MB/s

Yes, but an old Desktop Harddisk has let's say around 60MB/sec = 480Mbit.

And InternetSpeedTest is testing with one big file, i guess.

Btw. @Sunshine

I have some DDR1 400 Memorysticks left here. Next time, when you are near by, just pick'em up. smile

Ok. With that WD2500KS you have in the really best case 60MB.

I dont use bluetooth at all.

I used TweakBit driver updater. I updated some important ones but then i saw these and I was nervous -.-...

Notice how that one standard pci dual channel controller has that one where they say the update is older than the installed? Also the PCI Bus update is from 2018... how do i know it'll work with this old pc? Then when i click them i notice that some of the installed drivers are from microsoft and the updates are from NVIDIA so i dont want to break things :-/
