Just installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my 11 year old Dell Vostro 1500

...

I have an 830 SSD and 3 Gb Memory and the part is running like hell. (32Bit Version)

A cold start takes 11.2 secondes smile

...

Needed things.

> Bios Version A06

> Windows 8.1 ISO/DVD

...

After installation, (first start, i deactivated Automatic Updates ("Never search for Updates") and restartet the Laptop.

Then i downloaded Windows Service Stack Update 2016

> https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa … x?id=53219, installed it and restarted the machine.

Now i activated the automatic Updates, (with deactivated optional updates), and searched for Updates, (between 15 minutes it found 150+ important updates). I installed them and restarted the Machine.

There were two not installed devices in the device manager. I verified them as Ricoh devices, downloaded the drivers,

> http://ftp.dell.com/chipset/Ricoh_R5C83 … 240788.exe, installed them and restarted the Laptop.

When it came up, i search for Updates and it found again 9 important updates.

Now, the Laptop is ready for the free Upgrade to Windows 10.

> https://www.chip.de/downloads/Windows-1 … 00470.html

(Because it wouldn't work before with devices without driver).

I didn't make it yet, but i guess i will because of the meanwhile integrated very good Internetsecurity.

...

Btw. I had an original Windows 8.0 Pro Key/DVD. I downloaded the 8.1 Pro Iso from Microsoft. Key worked.

Yeah, the Windows 8.0 keys definitely work for the corresponding Windows 8.1 edition.  Successful activation should have also triggered Microsoft sending you a physical letter personally signed by the Windows development team, apologizing for Windows 8.0.

I still didn't receive the letter with apologies for Windows Me.

Really? My lawn was mown out of the box! Right after install i had this super sweet cool cut grass field:

bliss-windows-xp-original-640x514.jpg

Or was this XP? I dont remember anymore... since a year or so the grass turned into weed and i winblow ever since!

gettyimages-564752727-copy-1515519945.jpg

Whats up Arkos? Win 10 should indeed work "fine" except for the telemetry and other privacy and security issue's that seem to come up every month or so. I've ran win10 on really ancient win7 hardware and no problemo... of course you will have to dig out a shit load of features.

Basically one has to block windows from managing itself. And please, microsoft, you re-enable updates and telemetry every month also? MS crap...

For serious gaming and testing code i use win7home... for testing web content and new media and ultra new games and heavy software i turn to a win10 machine.

----------SIDE NOTE-------------------------
Last week i was at a client of a client... uuh... how to put this? Its a home for the mentally disabled. My client has like 15 people in that apartment building/hospital all got new/second hand DELL XEON cpu pc's from the local city hall. Nice hardware donation, i tell you!

BUT.. no windows on it.... all wiped clean... no partition or restore... no nothing. Great! I asked the guys "u guys want windows or linux?". As uneducated as most are... they sang WINDOWS (sounded like a mc-donalds advert). But they also asked "what the hell is linux?".

so i had 15 pc's to fill with windows 10

Let me tell you... about the secure microsoft in combination with the mentally disabled. I am NOT JOKING HERE sorry no jokes today....

I was at pc number 4... doing the setup (from USB mem stick with win10 enterprise)...
suddenly i had 3 guys nagging at me. MY PC IS INFECTED WITH A VIRUS one said...
the other guy said: I HAVE NOTIFICATIONS IN MY SIDE PANEL ABOUT PORN! I NEVER WATCH PORN he said
(yeah right, lol)

The 3th guy... damnit.. i forgot his problem already... i HATE him. LMAO (kidding)

Somehow these guys managed to infect their own pc within a FEW minutes. Thats how secure it is...

And... no... they were not doing this on purpose... the infections came from websites they visit. Through Chrome and Edge... infected...

Anyway... i made a huge fight with the guys... (hilarious but true)... i told them NEVER TO USE THE INTERNET... they disagreed with me. Then i told them to always have save sex... SUDDENLY THEY ALL AGREE... who said they are STUPID?? big_smile

Anyway i asked the guys if they would mind if i make a dual boot for them in feb-2019 with Ubuntu on it. I told them they probably cannot use it because they are SO DISABLED... angry at me again of course (im an asshole i know) but we made the deal. Hahhahahahaha... big_smile first i have to come back alive from a long trip to Asia again. Note all the guys wanted to join me... ASIA... guess why? Not for the chicks... nope... these mental cases WANT TO DO SHOPPING!!!!!!!! Bunch of WOMEN i called them (fight again, oh well.. damn they are strong.. we broke like 3 chairs... oh and 4 pc's... the others i will do later, WHAT A NUT HOUSE!).

Over - and - out

Next day my client calls me: "Ter, what the hell did you do with those guys last night? They told me non of them were allowed to go online and they said I BROKE THE$E CHAIRS AND PC'S!!! frick... when i back im gonna beat their asses!!!! hmm

Some days ago i made an old Laptop with "Linux Mint Cinnamon Tara".

And yes, at least with the Creators Update, Microsoft installs all what you deinstalled again.

There are ways to really deactivate and deinstall them, but it sucks doing this every some months.

I made a local account, not an Online Account.

But like this you can't use all those very very very important Microsoft Apps.

Im hanging onto win 7 here to. Im seriously thinking of switching main OS to Linux, but it still feels a bit weird handling in the desktop environment.

Re: Just installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my 11 year old Dell Vostro 1500

Same here... for real windows work/software i use win7 custum build by myself a few years ago (mainly firewall, softice debugger and file checksum checker). Some adobe software and autodesk. And games in there as well.

Dual boot default to Linux. That i boot most... with wine i can launch all the windows apps.

In the bios uefi i can switch to another physical drive where i have two hackingtosh versions, win10, arch and my most favorite linux distro slackware installed.

My main desktop is ubuntu gnome 18.04. Heavy customized with compiz and such. Looks and feels faboulus. Always when people see my desktop they go crazy...

For beginners i advise ubuntu gnome (not wayland! thats for 'gamers' who do not have any windows). For.old skool windows guys i advise to start with KDE  desktop envirioment. It is very slick many themes super.fast and windows users feel very at home there. U can fairly easy switch to gnome. X11 kde is super powerful and good looking.

Gnome on the other hand is more for the mac or the newb win10 users.

Linux mint or suse is great too. Once u start to work "under the hood".. u get to know the file system and terminal (command line) of a linux it will not matter to you anymore what distro u have. Its all the same. U can choose your own shell... doesnt matter... even android or mac (bsd) will feel very familiar to you.

With wine installed your linux distro will have the power of two car brands...

Ubuntu for beginner linux users because best hardware support and quick simple 30 minute install and all hardware will work out of the box.

I always install from USB iso (using build in startup disk creator).

It really does.not matter much which distro u choose... once u know one you know them all and u switch easy. If u a heavy desktop customizer like me. You want your own interface with awesome desktop animations that you will NEVER see in windows or mac make sure you learn to transfer your profile to other linux distro if u want to hop. My profile is more than 10 years old originate from slackware. After 30min install i put back my linux profile and everything i ever had setup is right there. No fuzz...

Re: Just installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my 11 year old Dell Vostro 1500

Now i do not use too many of these xmas effects... but i do have the cube and tube scroll. Especially handy with my dual screen setup and RA nx based remote desktop. So i can vpn work secure on my desktop (which also.acts as a server, any computer or tablet or phone i can use to access all my software in linux).

I cannot live without it.

And of course my production laptop HP elitebook top of the line:

without this beast i feel "lonely" when i travel, millitairy spec machine... i drop it in the sand on a beach... no problem!! Best laptop i ever had/seen.

This is the most useless piece of shite I have ever seen. There is no practical use for this, especially when I spend 80% of my work time in console, remote or file manager.

Hahahaha yeah i know what u mean, maybe i am not that hardcore as u are. But i often have GUI based software that i use. Like blender, gimp, web browsers, vlc, a wine game, wireshark etc. With dual screen well.... i need to move windows around by keyboard and i want to see all this all the time. Also i use workspaces, mostly 8 of them in use... so with dual screen thats 16 desktops! Also i have my remote control (a hacked logitech presenter) to switch bewteen windows, desktops, workspaces and multi media controls.

Also im crazy.. i not feel good without my terminal Amiga 500 font set. You are right to say this is also useless. But i just need those estetics. A bit like how some women cannot do without make-up.

Obviously i have an almost permanent SSH into the box... most terminal work i do on cool retro terminal emulator. Again i not have it in the xmas setting u see in these examples. Just SOME of these effects i use. And i do run linux GUI... a lot. Depends on the productivity a person has. I cant hang around in emacs forever! ? got other things to do!

What file manager u use in a terminal nameless? Ranger or MC? (i prefer ranger). Or u cd your way around? Please dont say Thunar?

Wait a minute, i just realize i vandalize Arkos his windows thread... sorrrryyyy (no mainbase attacks allowed, i crossed the line.. aarrg my bad).
