Re: Playing BF1942 on Linux (Lubuntu)

Hi all. For some reason I have weird glitches in game. Firstly, some color shapes appear different (glitched) and the game accepts no input whatsoever. Though I am playing the game with Wine directly from BF42 installation on Windows (/media/XXX/XXX/Program Files/EA Games/Battlefield 1942/BF42.exe). Is that a problem after all, should I install the game on Linux?

P.S: I have input problems when running the game in full screen mode but not in windowed... ;|

You have to add "renderer.forceSwSkinning 1" (without quotes) in Mods/bf1942/Settings/VideoDefault.con and save it.

And yes, you have to install Battlefield 1942 directly on Linux. If you own a physical copy just do a traditional installation process, otherwise follow this steps:

HTH. wink

Install the latest Wine version => 5.0. That's the reason of a glitched colours.

Also

  • use winehq Staging from https://www.winehq.org/ instead of the Wine provided by your distro

  • install the proprietary graphics drivers if you have NVIDIA

  • don't play any games located on the NTFS partition, copy it e.g. on /opt/bf1942 and grant rw permissions for current user

For quick BF1942 launch you can create the bf1942.desktop file with following text in /usr/share/applications/

Hidden text
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Battlefield 1942
Exec=wine BF1942.exe +game BF1942 +restart 1 +goToInterface 6
Path=/opt/bf1942/
Icon=/opt/bf1942/icon.ico
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Games;Wine;
Actions=Simple;

[Desktop Action Simple]
Name=Simple FRA
Exec=wine BF1942.exe +game BF1942 +restart 1 +joinServer 194.88.105.25 +isInternet 1 +reconnectPassword +NoDll 1

Ubuntu or Linux Mint is a most user-friendly distributions, which has some helpful settings/tools to ease the experience for new users.

Try Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
