BF1942 Playable on Website

Something I always wanted to do was create a website where you could just visit and start playing 1942 online.

The project is finally underway.

Updates as we go.

No promises, but there seems to be a possibility.

Dude... are you kidding me? WOW... i love your way of thinking. And with the computer power these days it IS possible.

I managed to play BF1942 on my android phone and ipad 1... ok.. it was streaming and laggy. Most difficult is to make the controls. I have tried so many ways... from xbox controlers to bluetooth gamepads and apple mouse and this and that. Do you have any place where you work on the project (semi) public? Want any help? Love to talk to you about your plan and progress....

Did you try compatibility mode?  (right-click the .exe to do this)  Which WinServer?
I have 2016 on a spare drive, and could check into it tomorrow if necessary.

If you use Bf-Servermanager, run it with adminrights, and "Bf1942_ded.exe" with adminrights and Compatibility XPSP3

And what happens if you don't have an Internet connection or it is interrupted? It makes no sense to have a browser supported version of BF1942 when most people play this game for the Singleplayer campaign mode.

I have thought about this, and it is close to my heart as my brother is still playing on his dial up line. Let me rethink this project.

Also I am trying to run the actual game, not a server.

Re: BF1942 Playable on Website

There was some heavy development around "remote gaming" some years ago, but it seems to have been put on ice. I dont know if there is any open source versions or the like on the net that could be used as a template.

If i was you i would use a linux/bsd server with wine (u can choose any windows type u want in there, doesn't matter actually).

Why? Because that is way more secure AND more important you get a lot more control over what connections u allow in and out and so forth.

Usually server versions of windows are same as non server versions. They have a few extra features. So it should run... like people said above use the COMP mode. Which is a bit of a strange/lame thing anyhow, if u ask me.

Server or client side connection drop? Well the game experience will stop obviously. Gaming in the cloud... like steam tried and like microsoft try to push to us (to drag more money out of our pockets).

Actually i have done this already few years ago on local lan. With BF and a gamepad and a big screen in my living room. It worked but i got owned a lot (what else is new). It is never going to be so tight and less lag as a real install.

But, it should be possible to stream game (technically)... i just personally think i will never really go for it.

Also i have worked on some Unreal Engine streaming... like in the video above with remote GPU render. It was way too complicated for us (a friend of mine and i) to really make it playable. Also he got married... kind of "end of story" for his gaming carreer. (his wife more into money than into gaming (or sex)).

I've never tried to run the game, just the dedicated server.  But I do have Server 2019 setup to run the dedicated server; I've simply never bothered to attempt launching the full game instead.

Even for running the dedicated server, I enable DirectPlay from the legacy features menu, same as you would on a Windows 10 desktop machine.  (Since that's the platform that Server 2016 and 2019 are based on; Windows 10.)  There may still be some assumption that DirectPlay is present, even though dedicated server probably ultimately doesn't utilize it.

I went ahead and tried launching the full game just now; I was able to launch and join the Team-SiMPLE server just fine.  No exit, no hang.

The XP SP3 compatibility mode is set, but simply as one of multiple things that Tuia's battlefield_1942_gamespy_patch_v1.61.exe installer already does for you; whether you manually tried to make those same configuration changes or not.

You probably already did, but it comes to mind that if you hadn't installed Tuia's update yet, you're also still operating with the old DRM protection that Windows intentionally disables.  So you need the no-CD aspect of Tuia's update as well, to eliminate the DRM dependency.

For what it's worth, I'm installing with real Battlefield 1942 CDs.  (And then the 1.6.19 patch, and then 1.61b patch.)   I suppose another possibility, if you're using some unofficial download source, is that the unofficial installer may or may not have planned on successfully handling the Windows Server platform.

But the first two things I would check are: DirectPlay enabled (Windows programs & features control panel; although for Windows Server, that's actually buried in Server Manager add roles & features wizard), and having Tuia's updated BF1942.EXE installed.
