The story of Philippines & Midway, or how to kill a server.

As soon as one of these maps come online (especially if its late) 1/3 of the people drops. Why are these even on the maproll? There arent many slower maps in the history of BF1942.

Some players like those maps. In fact, I would bet Midway is one of the most popular maps in BF1942. It ranked 6th place in http://blogs.battlefield.com/2012/09/10 … ry-bf1942/ map poll. Midway and Invasion of the Philippines can be improved, though.

Well, you might be right, maybe us who has played this for 10years arent the average player wink  But in that case I vote that you mod the shit out of them. For phillipines why not give axis a carrier? So we get rid of the rape in the beginning smile

Re: The story of Philippines & Midway, or how to kill a server.

main problem with philly is lack of transportation between bases and islands ...

between islands solution : add a landing craft spawnpoint at the piers that don't have one already, and make each spawnpoint have 5+ fastspawning (10 secs or less) crafts

land solution : 2+ fastspawning jeeps at each spawnpoint

the charm of philly can be island to island combat with landing crafts and torpedo boats as only transportation

the usual standard way to mod is more planes!, tanks!, carriers!, battleships, etc.

there's such a thing as adding TOO MANY fighting vehicles

my advice : don't add any extra of those, stick with more l-crafts n jeeps smile

hi all, philipines and midway can be boring, as any other map, modding is ok as long it is not over-modded. Good example of modded map is Battle of Britain with more planes and different types (yaks, zeros..). just saying to be careful with modding and not to over do it. i am sure there are experienced clan players with good ideas here on SiMPLE wink

Re: The story of Philippines & Midway, or how to kill a server.

Wake Island wins the map poll largely, probably because of the BF1942 Multiplayer Demo. Some few players still stick to the BF1942 Demo v1.0 Wake Island map only, which is free to play, with no nose camera view, no hit indication, when you run it looks like you're jumping around, and the super-jump bug. Those who never played it, can experience how it was BF1942 in the beginning. It's a leap to the past.
I'm sure everyone has their own ideas about modding some maps. The problem is to please everyone and realize those modding ideas.

Re: The story of Philippines & Midway, or how to kill a server.

It also comes down to what players one wish to have on the server. On Simple I often get the impression of that the admins are only considered about having a full 72p-server at any given moment, no matter the quality of the players. Sure Midway and and Phillipines may attract a lot of players, but not high quality returning players.

Yesterday I had a lot more fun playing public 6vs6 on giza (new map serv)  and 6vs6 on aberdeen only (no total noobs on any of the servers at that moment) than 60+ players on simple (I left when crap-maps came). But maybe thats just me.

typical clanner talk smile i couldn't disagree more

my criteria for playing 1942 :

more than 50 players

stock / standard maps only

no ctf

no rtr+sw

low spawn times

plenty of transportation

30+ minute rounds

baserape allowed

freecam on

if one of these aren't met on a server, i won't or only play very briefly there  :-]

cheers !

Re: The story of Philippines & Midway, or how to kill a server.

Phillipines is the best map out there imho, it has all the different types of vehicles. Especially the size of the map is awesome; I love the moments when i can hide and try to get a spawn point. That's just bf42 as it's ment to be.....

Better get rid of Berlin, that is just a map made for a game like COD.

The vehicles make bf42 such a great game.....

Re: The story of Philippines & Midway, or how to kill a server.

The problem at Midway is that when a team masters the island, then the map is almost over. Landing become almost impossible. And it gets even more difficult when the ships get far from island in order to take the northern and southern flags.
The only way at this moments to reverse the situation is to take the island back, and to get it back, ships must be driven close to the island so that chalands are more than an easy target for planes.
Conclusion : this map is perfect when ships shoot defguns and tanks and stay close to the island. But it's hell when ships try to take the northern and southern flag.

At philipines, just as Nosferatu said, what makes the map boring is the size : I've never seen Axis take all the flags. Too many roads, places to hide, mountains... So adding jeeps, why not, but I'm not sure it will help for something : I find jeeps appear kinda often. Tanks ? Useless !!! Two tanks are enough and when a team masters the three western flags, there's no need to have tanks.
Giving Axis a carrier ? Too easy for Axis. The challenge is to reach the coast to take a flag, and I think there are enough ways to get one. And the shape of the map makes impossible for allied to react quickly.
I don't think it's possible to mod this map better. If I was asked, I'd personnally answer to remove it of the list, but some people like it (especially when they join Allied and get a plane at the beginning).

I think the following happend also on Iwo Jima. But i'm not 100% sure if it was on Iwo Jima.

> As the this battle was over, the allies thought, that the island would be clean. Before nightfall, some parts of the troups had to hand out all ammo, because of many casualties in the weeks before in night. To many accidents by drunken soldiers. They shot each other or themself. Only the nightwatch and MP had a few ammo.

> In the break of dawn, the Japanese, which were hiding in the tunnels under Mount Suribachi started   a massive Counterattack with all they had, including own live. The Allies were completly surprised and not ready for a fight. (Some parts of the troups had no ammo, only MP and nightwatch). The only way   to fight was man vs. man or later by using a weapon from dead enemys.

After some of these attacks on that morning, the allies reorganised themself and for the next ~30 days they had to clean out every hole and every bunker one by one.

26000 american casualties 6800 dead

From 20'000 japanese soldiers only ~200 survived.

In my point of view, the map needs more vegetation like trees and bushes especially on hills and some open fields to at least experience the jungle warfare in vanilla game. And I think it's best to remove the Japanese destroyer (Daihatsu-class landing craft is just enough) and tanks as the USAFFE forces did not operate M4 Sherman (instead, they use M3 Stuart) and the IJA Type 97 ShinHoTo Chi-Ha only first appeared at the Fall of Corregidor (05/06/1942) during the Philippines campaign between 12/1941~05/1942.

Agree, but DICE have not added more vegetation to Invasion of Philippines map to create the jungle warfare experience, because the additional objects would cause FPS drops.
BF1942 game tries to reach a balance between historical accuracy and gameplay, take Berlin, Omaha Beach and Kursk maps as examples.

Re: The story of Philippines & Midway, or how to kill a server.

...

Not only... One guy unmounted a Browning .50 MG, (38.5 Kg), from a Bomber and used that. He and his team cleaned between the first days hard fight many bunkers allone. But he could only shot 2-3 salves with one belt (110 bullets). He shot in the cranel and the ricochets killed the people inside.

One other of his team was running the hole day back for belts. The same guy also saved many soldiers. Every time, when he was going back for ammo, he weared another guy all the long way back through the wet ground of vulcanashes.

In this night, when the japaneses were starting the surprise attack, his team was in Nightwatch with only some ammo for carabine. Many grenades flew in their position (attitude). When the first grenades came in, he could throw them back, but by one of them, he lost a hand. He saved his teammates lifes. Later he was fighting with one hand, man vs. man, some meteres out of the position and saved again another mate. Some minutes later, back in the position on the next attack, he jumped on a other grenade and saved all mates around him. Postmortem he became some medals, ... this was his great day and night.

If im not wrong, before he jumped on this last nade, he lost his other hand while throwing back another nade again. The japanese were not dumb, and when you see, that your nades come back, before exploding, then you throw them with timing. Bec. of that he lost both hands.

I saw this documentation and some of his still living mates recount that day. I guess, i have this one  somewhere under my 1000 docus.
